Kim present an excerpt from Kim's "Lee/gendary", a multidisciplinary piece inspired
by Bruce Lee. Shyu will also collaborate with dancer Lenora Lee and cellist
Rubin Kodelhi in spontaneous text/movement/music composition.
”Big Bang”, a new music and mixed media series
every third Monday of the month is the creative collision of musicians with
artists in spoken word, dance, visual art, video art, found words, theatre, etc. presenting
works in progress. The evenings will include two featured groups followed by a brief talk
back with the audience after each set. Every evening ends by inviting audience members to
join in an informal jam session for about 10 minutes.
Electronics player Brian Moran began his performance career in experimental
dance, whose working methods he later adapted to music and sound design. A one-time
collaborator with artists as diverse as Lydia Lunch, Ikue Mori, the live video group NNeng,
and the Yoshiko Chuma and Stephanie Skura dance companies, his approach to musical
performance employs a variety of circuit-bent electronics, analog synthesizers, field
recordings, and processing devices. Brian is currently attending his final semester in the
nursing program at Borough of Manhattan Community College.
Trained in Persian classical percussion and other near-eastern styles, Matt
Hannafin has performed at venues as diverse as the United Nations General
Assembly Hall, the New England Conservatory of Music, and CBGBs. His collaborators have
included a similarly wide range of artists, from Turkish multi-instrumentalist Omar Faruk
Tekbilek and Ukrainian bandura virtuoso Julian Kytasty to Borbetomagus guitarist Donald
Miller and legendary industrial percussionist Z'ev. For improvisation, his approach blends
the techniques and timbres of eastern and western percussion with sonorities and ideas
borrowed from nature, electronic music, and the urban-industrial soundscape.
Cynthia Spencer works with contemplative arts, both traditional and
contemporary forms, as a way of integrating the view of meditation into all aspects of life.
This exploration began with movement improvisation with Barbara Dilley and has since
extended to include such forms as kado (the way of flowers), brush calligraphy, and
qigong. She has performed at downtown arts community venues such as PS 122 and with
the Dan Tao school at the Interfaith Center of NY.

MOPDTK is a recent group formed in NYC. In this
ensemble, I attempt to write compositions that reflect the strange relationship I feel to
jazz history. On the one hand, I grew up listening to and still love traditional jazz, but on
the other, I am deeply disturbed and disgusted with its current state of turpitude. This
music, instead of attempting to reconcile these two simultaneous opinions, pits them
against each other creating music that both blatantly mocks and reveres the jazz tradition.

New CD Out: The Stryker / Slagle Band "Live at the Jazz Standard" (ZOHO)
"Live at the Jazz Standard is a field report from one of today's most inspired two-man
teams."
David Adler - JazzTimes 9/05
"The co-leaders, having played together for nearly two decades, have achieved an empathy
that results in several passages
of remarkable collective improvisation."
Will Smith - Downbeat 9/05
Voted a Rising Star Acoustic Jazz Group in the 2004 Downbeat Critics Poll
Guitarist Dave Stryker and Saxophonist Steve Slagle have been
developing a group sound for over 17 years. Recent gigs have included a packed week at
the Jazz Bakery in LA where Don Heckman in the the LA Times called them "first-rate jazz
talents", and a SRO show at the 2002 Monterey Jazz Festival. The group's most recent
recording is the self-titled The Stryker/Slagle Band (Khaeon World Music). It has received
great reviews including a feature story in the Dec. 2003 issue of Downbeat, and was
picked as one of the Top Ten CD's of 2003 in the New Jersey Star Ledger and Jazzreview.
Dave and Steve consider this band their main focus after years as sidemen with many of
the greats. Dave spent over 13 years with Stanley Turrentine, and also worked with Jack
McDuff and Kevin Mahogany, and has over 15 CD's out as a leader, (most featuring Slagle.)
He's also been a sideman on over 25 others. Stryker was voted one of the Top Ten
Guitarists in both the Critics and Readers Poll of Downbeat Magazine in 2001, and his
latest CD, Blue to the Bone III (SteepleChase Music), was picked as one of the top CD's of
2002 by jazz station WBGO and by Jazzreview. Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls Dave
"one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years."
,p>
Saxophonist Steve Slagle also has released 10 CD's as a leader, and performed as a
sideman on countless others. He has played with Charlie Haden, Milton Nascimento, and
Carla Bley to name a few. Steve was musical director of the Mingus Big Band for many
years. His most recent CD New New York (OmniTone), features Stryker and Joe Lovano. He
is also on Joe Lovano's Grammy winning CD "52nd St. Themes" on Blue Note. Jazz Times
says "Slagle ranks in the upper echelon of alto sax players on the scene today."
