“You have a phenomenal touch, man!”
- Herbie Hancock
“The most abundantly gifted of pianists”
- The Times of London
Although many jazz musicians are also trained classical musicians, it is unusual for a musician to manage successful careers
in both fields. Pianist Simon Mulligan certainly has. At the age of 19 he recorded his first classical CD under the
direction of Yehudi Menuhin, with whom he was later to successfully work. Since that time he has produced 15 highly regarded
CD's, and has established himself as a soloist and chamber musician, with recitals and concerto appearances at many of the
world’s major concert halls. Intriguingly, Simon's jazz credentials and improvisational abilities are equally as strong, as is his
composing work, which includes numerous compositions for both TV and Film. His recent signing to Sony Masterworks will
see the release later this year of ‘Playlist’ – an album of original compositions with his UK-based jazz quartet.

Bill Zavatsky, host
Andrew McCarron;
Richard Milazzo;
Coleen Murphey Alexander;
Farid Nassif
Andrew McCarron is a poet born and raised in the Hudson River Valley of New York State. He started writing poetry during a workshop he took with John Ashbery as an undergraduate at Bard College. The inspiration for his work continues to draw from the Hudson River, Catskill Mountains, and–in particular–a small hamlet called Annandale-on-Hudson in northern Dutchess County. Poems of his have appeared in the Hudson Review, Colorado Review, Southwest Review, Evergreen Review, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, and Hanging Loose Magazine. His first collection of poems, Mysterium, is slated to be published by Edgewise Press in the near future.
Richard Milazzo is an art critic, curator, poet and publisher. Among his most recent books are Saint Clair Cemin: Sculptor from Cruz Alta (New York, Brent Sikkema Editions, 2005), Along the Hudson (Tokyo, Tokyo Publishing House, 2006), The Paintings of Ross Bleckner (Brussels, Editions Alain Noirmhomme, 2007), Il Facchino di Venezia (Venice, Sotoportego Editore, 2007), Green Nights / Golgotha / Love’s Quarrel (Belgrade, Dossier, 2007), and Stone Dragon Bridge (Modena, Emilio Mazzoli Editore, 2007).
Farid Nassif’s published material includes “Joseph Skibinski,” an account of a Vietnam vet turned butcher that came out in SILO, a Vermont literary journal. His short story, “SinSin,” an account of a New York bar fight, was also published in SILO. He worked alongside the editor-in-chief of Data News Weekly (New Orleans) in 1998, where he published “Lorraine Hansberry: Young, Gifted, and Black,” a preview article on New Orleans entertainment. In Los Angeles, Farid wrote, composed and arranged an original CD of music produced by George Landress at Emily’s Basement Records. He has performed professionally as a writer and musician in live venues such as Genghis Cohen, Molly Malone’s, Birds (in Los Angeles), Cheers (Boston), and Café Lika (Manhattan) to name a few. Farid has recently completed his first collection of short stories.
Bill Zavatsky, tonight’s m.c., recently published Where X Marks the Spot, poems (Hanging Loose Press) and with Ron Padgett co-translated The Poems of A. O. Barnabooth by Valery Larbaud (Black Widow Press).

Think Bjork or Portishead, hyper transferred by dream onto a camel trail, en route to a 14th century Parisian tavern....

9:00pm Ryan Blotnick Band
Last February Ryan Blotnick released his debut album for a packed house at Cornelia St. Now he is back with a new project that has just recorded his second album for Songlines, featuring Belgian clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst of the Han Bennink Trio, and drum legend Jeff Williams. The audience can expect much of the "lyrical, almost nostalgic tone" of Blotnick's first project, but with a new palette of effects, vamp, drones, and Bass Clarinet.
"Guitarist Ryan Blotnick plays with a warm tone, a relaxed cadence and a smart but unassuming air. Born and reared in Maine, he is now based in Brooklyn. On his engagingly pensive debut, Music Needs You (Songlines), Mr. Blotnick presents a handful of original compositions. There's a sense of something natural unfolding as he and his band mates elaborate on his themes."
- Nate Chinen, New York Times, 3/7/08

10:30pm Michael Blake Band
Blake's new band emphasizes a passion for modern blues with soul and abstract lyricism.
"If musicians like Blake can rescue the real mainstream from the hands --and mouths -- of re-creators, they can continue to prove that there's still a lot that can be created from evolutionary, as well as revolutionary, music." Ken Waxman, Jazz Weekly.com

ROB DUGUAY QUARTET
Jon Yao, trombone;
Tyler Blanton, vibraphone;
Rob Duguay, bass;
Nadav Snir-Zelniker, drums
|
|
|
Rob Duguay Quartet is an assembly of world class musicians who share an appreciation for cutting-edge modern music while simultaneously embracing the traditions of swing, bebop, and Latin styles of jazz. Duguay’s compositions are circular creating nice avenues for positively flowing improvisations (often swinging) and typically avoid common jazz forms (i.e. 16 and 32 bar forms). Rob Duguay Quartet performs original compositions running the gamut of musical styles and pays homage to such greats as Sonny Rollins, Cedar Walton, Wayne Shorter, Charles Mingus, and Duke Ellington by playing some of their jazz not-so-standards.
