New CD Out: The Stryker / Slagle Band "Live at the Jazz Standard" (ZOHO)
"Live at the Jazz Standard is a field report from one of today's most inspired two-man
teams."
David Adler - JazzTimes 9/05
"The co-leaders, having played together for nearly two decades, have achieved an empathy
that results in several passages
of remarkable collective improvisation."
Will Smith - Downbeat 9/05
Voted a Rising Star Acoustic Jazz Group in the 2004 Downbeat Critics Poll
Guitarist Dave Stryker and Saxophonist Steve Slagle have been
developing a group sound for over 17 years. Recent gigs have included a packed week at
the Jazz Bakery in LA where Don Heckman in the the LA Times called them "first-rate jazz
talents", and a SRO show at the 2002 Monterey Jazz Festival. The group's most recent
recording is the self-titled The Stryker/Slagle Band (Khaeon World Music). It has received
great reviews including a feature story in the Dec. 2003 issue of Downbeat, and was
picked as one of the Top Ten CD's of 2003 in the New Jersey Star Ledger and Jazzreview.
Dave and Steve consider this band their main focus after years as sidemen with many of
the greats. Dave spent over 13 years with Stanley Turrentine, and also worked with Jack
McDuff and Kevin Mahogany, and has over 15 CD's out as a leader, (most featuring Slagle.)
He's also been a sideman on over 25 others. Stryker was voted one of the Top Ten
Guitarists in both the Critics and Readers Poll of Downbeat Magazine in 2001, and his
latest CD, Blue to the Bone III (SteepleChase Music), was picked as one of the top CD's of
2002 by jazz station WBGO and by Jazzreview. Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls Dave
"one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years."
,p>
Saxophonist Steve Slagle also has released 10 CD's as a leader, and performed as a
sideman on countless others. He has played with Charlie Haden, Milton Nascimento, and
Carla Bley to name a few. Steve was musical director of the Mingus Big Band for many
years. His most recent CD New New York (OmniTone), features Stryker and Joe Lovano. He
is also on Joe Lovano's Grammy winning CD "52nd St. Themes" on Blue Note. Jazz Times
says "Slagle ranks in the upper echelon of alto sax players on the scene today."

Richard the second's untimely end, and from Henry IV pt 1 the relationship
of Henry Percy (Hotspur) and his wife, Lady Percy. The Pastorals;

Matthew Welch
"a composer possessed of both rich imagination and the
skill to bring his fancies to life, leaps vast
geographical distances, imagining statistically
implausible musical melting pots that sound utterly
natural."
TimeOut NYC
Inspired by Celtic and South East Asian ensemble
traditions placed in an underground jazz and rock
context, the ecstatic and exuberant music of
Blarvuster combines punk/march drumming, syncopated
dub-esque bass and guitar lines, dervish saxophone,
Irish whistle-like flutes, fiddle style viola and
florid bagpipes.
Flux Quartet plays Welch
"Composed for conventional string quartet, Matthew
Welch's Siubhal Turnlar mixes aspects of Celtic
bagpipe music and southeast Asian gamelan. It's a
seemingly unlikely combination, perhaps, but Welch
uncovers unsuspected commonalities in the two idioms,
weaving them into a rich tapestry of modal melodies
and dancing rhythms. The Flux Quartet brings an ideal
mix of bravura and charm to a piece that deserves to
be widely performed and heard."

LIARS! CHEATERS! EVILDOERS!
Book launch for LIARS! CHEATERS! EVILDOERS! Demonization and the End of Civil Debate in America by Tom DeLuca and John Buell.
"After reading and hearing so many epitaphs to political discourse in a polarized nation in the wake of 9/11, I take heart from Tom De Luca's and John Buell's realistic but hopeful argument for one last mighty effort to pull democracy back from the brink." Bill Moyers

TANYA KALMANOVITCH: HUT FIVE
Tanya Kalmanovitch, violin & viola;
Pete McCann, guitar;
John Hebert, bass;
Owen Howard, drums
|
|
|
A formidable classical performer, Kalmanovitch is fast developing a
reputation in the international jazz and creative music community as an
innovator on her primary instrument, the viola. She explores the viola’s
dark, warm terrain, uncovering its rich, vocal qualities in the context of
jazz and free improvisation. Unabashedly expressive and a fierce technician,
Kalmanovitch’s breathtaking performances have garnered rave reviews in
DownBeat, Coda, the Montreal Gazette, and the Irish Times.
Kalmanovitch will feature her electric
quartet Hut Five. Joined by guitarist Pete McCann, bassist John Hebert, and
drummer Owen Howard, she will perform original compositions blending her
primary musical influences: contemporary jazz, 20th Century classical music,
rock and free improvisation. Central to the group’s aesthetic is the idea of
expressive contrasts. The original compositions span the poles of extended
composition and free improvisation, and Kalmanovitch’s rich viola and sweet
violin float over the astringent chromaticism and rhythmic complexity of her
compositions. The group has released two records on Perspicacity.

Bill McHenry, saxophone;
John Herbert, bass;
Mark Ferber, drums

On Thursday, January 26th Frank Carlberg Quartet With Christine
Correa will be performing at Cornelia Street Cafe. For the past 10 years pianist/
composer Carlberg and vocalist Correa have been exploring 20th century poetry by writers
such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, Anselm Hollo etc and setting some
of it to music. Their latest CD, "In The Land Of Art" on Fresh Sound, was well received in
the press. In the pages of All About Jazz, Elliot Simon wrote:
"..... with its on-the-mark musical, vocal and piano interpretations, adventurous rhythm
section explorations and expressive sax playing, Carlberg has shown that s*it can flow
uphill In The Land Of Art".
For this performance the group, which also includes Bill McHenry on tenor sax,
John Hebert on bass and Mark Ferber on drums, will also perform new
music from their upcoming release "Red Piano" also
on Fresh Sound.
This season of Gnu Vox, the jazz vocal series, concentrates on emerging vocalists. The
programs will showcase the singers unique abilities as interpreters, improvisers,
composers and arrangers from traditional to avant-garde jazz. The Cornelia Street Cafe
provides an intimate setting in which to hear these artists at a reasonable price!
