THE FRINGE IS BACK!
The Fringe are one of the genuine living treasures of the Boston jazz scene. Originally
formed back in 1971 by tenor-saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman,
and drummer Bob Gullotti as an outlet for their free jazz improvisations, The Fringe have
entertained and enlightened Boston area jazz audiences for over 30 years. Bassist
Appleman left the band in 1985 to become Chairman of the Bass Department at Berklee
College and was replaced by veteran bassist John Lockwood.
Along with their impressive tenure with The Fringe, Gullotti, Garzone, and Lockwood are
in great demand as session players and have played with many of the greats of
contemporary jazz. Along with keeping up with a busy performance schedule, each of
them are well-respected educators helping to inspire the jazz musicians of tomorrow.

Much like the popularity achieved by Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music when it first came to
the United States, the Afro-Peruvian sound, complete with cajones and zapateo dancing, is
the latest sound to come to the jazz world. 12/8 polyrhythms over 6/4 time and many
other fascinating rhythmic formulas are at the core of Afro-Peruvian jazz music and
infuse the performances with a vitality and strength unparalleled in contemporary jazz
expression.
Gabriel Alegría is a leading figure in the world jazz music scene and his tour is
sponsored by AIJP, IAJE and the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.

ARTISTS’ SALON
This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.

SKYE STEELE GROUP
Skye Steele, violin;
Christopher Hoffman, cello;
Mike Effenberger, piano;
Mike Savino, bass;
John Hadfield, drums/percussion
|
|
|
Skye Steele’s group bears the
mark of its leader’s strong balance between the
eclecticism of his experiences as a side-man and the
strident individualism of his approach to the violin.
His arrangements bring American popular songs of his
own generation crashing head-on with influences
ranging from Turkish Gypsy music, to Afro-Brazilian,
to French Impressionism, all with a rigorous Modern
Jazz aesthetic (he taps Simon and Garfunkle, Sesame
Street, Satie, and Willie Wonka). Skye’s own
compositions combine driving, angular rhythms and
darkly nuanced harmonies with an infectious sense of
lyricism. “My goal is always to engage and transport
the people with every tune and every solo.”
“Steele makes his instrument sing joyously”
