ARTISTS’ SALON
This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.

Chris Lightcap, bass & compositions;
Greald Cleaver, drums

Having released 2 critically acclaimed releases with his two-tenor quartet, bassist and
composer Chris Lightcap brings another configuration of new music to Cornelia
Street Cafe. Lightcap has been featured in the bands of Craig Taborn, Joe Morris, Mark
Turner and Regina Carter, and tonight he will lead a band featuring his longtime
collaborators Tony Malaby, Mark Turner ,Gerald Cleaver as
well as Craig Taborn on piano.
"One of the bright lights of New York's younger players, the bassist has been fashioning a
group sound around a pair of tenor saxophonists for years. His writing can be
simultaneously demonstrative and reflective, an accomplishment that gives his music
emotional breadth."
-Jim Macnie, Village Voice
"A bassist-bandleader who's made some excellent records with two tenor saxophones out
front."
- Ben Ratliff, New York Times
"Bassist Chris Lightcap has worked alongside avant-minded mavericks such as Cecil
Taylor, Anthony Braxton, and Joe Morris, but he's also right at home in more mellifluous
units led by Regina Carter and Craig Taborn. perhaps that explains the infectious swagger
and fat grooves he brings to bear on Bigmouth (Fresh Sound New Talent), a playful bag of
tunes featuring saxists Tony Malaby and Bill McHenry and drummer Gerald Cleaver"

PEKKA PYLKKÄNEN'S TUBE FACTORY
To be expected until midnight:
Fairly strong Nordic breeze with some local snowfalls. Occasionally the northernly wind
turns South and gets warmer especially when the sun comes out. The suddenly risen
warmth can also cause thunder and storm and other minor inconvenience. These rapid
climate, temperature and atmosphere changes may be felt as raising heart-beat,
sweatening hands, sudden flushing and stomping feet, but usually these symptoms last
only for several hours so there is no immediate need for a doctor visit. If in any case you
still wish to see a doctor, please make sure that the doctor you are intending to visit is not
a real jazz fan, since he might prove to be totally unrelievable in these matters. The rumor
says that a doctor once, while having a patient, started listening to music from a CD at the
same moment when the patient had told the doctor the reason for his visit. So he left the
poor patient all by himself getting totally immersed in this music and forgot about his
patient.

"Pekka Pylkkanen is among the jazz elite in his native Finland. A stalwart
member of the fabled UMO Jazz Orchestra, Pylkkanen shows his crafty wares on his solo
debut for Naxos Jazz. On Pekka's Tube Factory, the multi-reedman display a fine
compositional pen, expresssive, accomplished techenical skills and a keen ear for
arranging."

Allan Kozinn (New York Times)
contextualizes SERIAL UNDERGROUND, CCi’s monthly performances in the basement of
the Cornelia Street Cafe – “Informal performances of concert works were part of the
musical ecology, and to some extent part of the ecology of urban night life as well. That
tradition lasted into the 20th century, when ... “serious music” reserved the concert hall as
its home, and jazz (and later other popular forms) took its place at street level. ...
Composers Collaborative and its inventive artistic director, the composer and pianist Jed
Distler, have decided that this [lost] intimacy [between listeners and
performers] is worth recapturing.”
SERIAL #13 presents us with the family history of our disgruntled protagonist in
The Gold Standard (excerpt) by Jed Distler and Ed Schmidt
(The Last Supper); the first NY appearance by David Sonton-Caflisch and
Riccarda Caflisch of Switzerland’s Konzertreihe o! playing the music of John
Cage, Justine F. Chen, Debussy and more; and the irrepressible oboe genius, Matt
Sullivan.

STORYTELLING
Barbara Aliprantis, host
Storytelling occurs the second Tuesday of every month.
Back 1997, my beloved friend and mentor Dr. John Kallas and I, with the help of a handful of story lovers and tonight's featured tellers Jim Hawkins and Elizabeth Rowe, launched this "2nd Tuesday of the Month" series. The series was billed as "Storytellers from Around the World: Unite!” And, indeed, over the years we've united and featured over 125 tellers - from as near as our own backyard - Greenwich Village - and as faraway as, China, Ireland, Israil, Japan, Scotland, etc., etc. And, of course, countless others have stepped up to the Mic and "swapped" a story. Hmm...and some folks said it “wouldn’t last...”
Ten years later we're going strong and welcome back to our stage, Jim Hawkins and Elizabeth Rowe who started the storytelling ball rolling - so to speak! - Barbara A.
JIM HAWKINS, Irish-American Storyteller/Actor/Musician/Teacher, spins humorous and poignant tales from his memories of growing in Ireland and in and around THE BIG APPLE! http://www.jimhawkinsirishstory.com/
ELIZABETH ROWE, Storyteller/Actor/Writer/Teacher, is delighted to return to help us celebrate this special anniversary! Her repertoire includes a rich blend of family stories, world folktales, myths, legends and literary tales, which she performs in English and French!
Format: Featured Teller(s)/Open Mic - 6 - 8 minute limit

Please note show time: 8:00PM - 9:30PM
Anderskov Accident has released their second CD,
UNITY OF ACTION. "Unity of Action" is
the follow-up to their debut album "Anderskov Accident" (scr/ILK), which received the
Danish Music Award Jazz 2003 as
“Jazz Discovery of the Year”.
The music of Anderskov Accident is about unifying opposites. Edgy innovation meets and
unites with the straight down
beautiful. Groovy meets melodious, and high expressiveness is placed in a natural forward
flow. Short and longer stories are
told with raw energy, heart and soul along with mania and melancholy. Odd meters and
mysterious rhythms are played hairily
groovy – with a lot of personal freedom.
This music is visionary and warm-blooded. It is liquid, sparkling and intuitive yet subtly
structured. Unconventional
compositions and grooves are mixed with great musical reserve, giving the music an inner
balance and a true spontaneity.
The result is honest, unpolished - and an emotionally powerful experience. This truly
being the album to elevate ANDERSKOV
ACCIDENT up the ladder. Accommodating both the open-minded listener and the wild at
heart.
Double Danish Music Award winner Jacob Anderskov received in 2004 the
Danish Government Art Foundation’s
prestigious 3-year Composers Working Grant, as one of the youngest rhythmic composers
ever.
" I dare to promise the open-minded listener that the respect for Anderskov's musical
universe will grow for every minute. It is
deeply original and is really pulling nails out. In my ears, Anderskov's music is like an
ancient Nordic fairytale flower that slowly
opens up and takes new colours, while you are at first gaping and amazed, later moved by
its richness and satisfying beauty.
So now I just can't get enough of this redefined Nordic sound, and must hear the records
over and over again."
