Judgment marks the third album by drummer Pete Zimmer and his quintet. This album, along with their two
previous releases, distinguishes the Pete Zimmer Quintet as one of the premier upcoming straight ahead jazz groups of the
early 21st century. Since the release of their debut CD, Common Man, in September of 2004, which was called an “impressive
debut” by the Philadelphia Daily News, they have been captivating audiences with their hard swing and moving melodies as
they keep busy performing at some of the most prestigious jazz venues along the East Coast and Midwest. Zimmer’s second
album, Burnin’ Live at the Jazz Standard, was recorded live at Manhattan’s Jazz Standard on February 7, 2006. All Music
Guide has recently stated that they could be “the best kept secret in straight ahead jazz circa 2006.”
"Judgment is packed with memorable pieces, including a pair of edgy, show-stopping duo numbers, with Garzone and Zimmer
sparring like they'd been doing so forever…"Cut Off" is a Jazz Messenger-style tune featuring engaging turns by Frahm,
trumpeter Michael Rodriguez, Dodo and Zimmer that leaves listeners wanting more."

ENTERTAINING SCIENCE -- SEACHANGE: REVERSING THE TIDE
Roald Hoffmann
|
|
|
SeaChange: Reversing the Tide is a dramatic lecture devised, written and presented by scientist, Roger Payne and his wife, actress Lisa Harrow. SeaChange weaves the knowledge of science and the wisdom of poetry into a compelling presentation arguing that the human species is not the overseer of life but an integral part of life’s complex web, and that our survival requires that we attend not just to our own well-being, but also, to the well-being of that entire web of life.
SeaChange: Reversing the Tide blends the poetry of Shakespeare, Shelley, Robert Frost, Wendell Berry, Gary Snyder, Mary Oliver and others with a clear exposition of the consequences of our current indifference to Natural Laws and the benefits that can be achieved by living in accordance with those laws.

"Diverse program" is sometimes a euphemism for "hodge-podge," but the young reed player's Translucent Space accounts
for all its esthetic zig-zags. Allusions to electric jazz and classical motifs snuggle next to free-bop jaunts and hard- driving
swing. Rigby plays as it lays, and does so with élan."
- Jim Macnie, NYC VILLAGE VOICE (Dec. 06)
"I'd go so far as to say that Translucent Space is the freshest and most individual jazz album of the year so far; it lets light
through but in such a way that the antecedents and influences are sensed diffusely rather than clearly seen."
- Brian Morton, UK JAZZ REVIEW (Sept. 06)
"Translucent Space" (Fresh Sound-New Talent), the new album by the saxophonist and bass clarinetist Jason Rigby, doesn't
come by its name casually; it's an album of airy, often diaphanous music, with faint echoes of early fusion and Third Stream.
Mr. Rigby plays here with the album's rhythm section of Mike Holober on piano, Cameron Brown on bass and Mark Ferber on
drums. At 8:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Cafe."

John Morrison's monthly comedy quickie--some of the smartest, most politically savvy comedians in or passingt through NewYork make and unmake their bed here before some soon to be deported illegal third world alien comes in to clean it all up . . .
For our first Motel show of the new year, we are very pleased and proud to be bringing back our good friend Todd Barry. Todd will be scooting back and forth between Sketchfest shows in San Francisco, but we'll be lucky enough to have him for one night only.
From HBO's "Flight of the Conchords" to the Montreal, Aspen and Edinburgh Comedy Festivals, there's not much Todd hasn't done in the world of stage, film, radio and TV comedy. Howard Stern, Lucky Louie, Chappelle's Show, Letterman, Conan, etc., etc... just take our word for it, you are going to love Todd, OK? OK. (Everyone does. Uncanny, but true.)
Joining Todd, Comedy Central's Liam McEneaney has just returned from his European tour, and we're guessing he'll have some smart things to say for himself, as always. Old friend and winner of the Bud Light "Ladies of Laughter" Contest, Maureen Langan will be here, and you can see for yourself why Backstage magazine named her one of the "Ten Standout Stand-ups Worth Watching".
We had such a fun time last month with Chicago Second-City alum Thomas Middleditch that we've asked him back for an encore, and we're delighted to be able to present to you deaf comic Douglas Ridloff, co-creator and producer of "ASL (American Sign Language) in the Raw". Douglas - along with his interpreter for the hearing - will have you in stitches, guaranteed. Funny, funny man.

LENNY BRUCE
Peter Carlaftes in a one man show.
|
|
|
LENNY BRUCE: Dead and Well
written and performed by Peter Carlaftes
Admission: $12 (includes house drink)
Lenny Bruce is back. The controversial stand-up comic, writer, social critic and satirist, who died in 1966, returns to earth and the stage for a hiatus from the afterlife, this time inhabiting the body of Peter Carlaftes.
Lenny has plenty to talk about. His hilarious afterlife perspective gives him a knowledge of all that came before, as well as all that's destined to happen in the future. For instance:
• Who really killed JFK? The answer is finally revealed--and it will shock you for the rest of your life!
• The dinosaurs are coming back. "Remember how the dinosaurs disappeared? Nobody knows why. Well, they come back. Nobody knows why."
• Cold War II. You think the first Cold War was bad? Brace yourself.
Lenny knows the heirarchy of heaven. And because no one can persecute him, he's a new man, with a new attitude, and a wealth of new material, that takes its cue from such Lenny classics as Religions, Inc., How Hitler Got Started and To Is a Preposition, Come Is a Verb.
"Carlaftes is the reincarnation of Lenny Bruce," (SF Weekly).
