THE DREAM CATCHER'S SONG
Margarita Suarez, editor/host
|
|
|
The Dream Catcher's Song is a anthology presenting five emerging
Brooklyn writers. These five women bring you on an internal and
external journey as they take turns sharing their words. One page you
are in 1940's Baltimore, live jazz sounding in your ears; the next you
are climbing Mt. Etna, ash staining your fingers. One page you are
witnessing the vulnerable place of healing from abuse, another you are
in a world where foxes speak. Another page shouts the praise of
sisterhood.
Containing poetry, memoirs, fiction, short stories, and personal
narratives, the book will reveal the importance of sharing and hearing
each other’s stories as it gives you an inside look at one writer's
group’s process from inspiration to final work.
Gabriella M.
Belfiglio, Kim D. Brandon, Princene Hyatt, Olivia S. Taylor, and Rita
REB Wilson will read short selections from
this, their debut group publishing effort. Book sale to follow.

"With an uncommon instrumentation and a pluralistic stylistic orientation (rock, free, folk build upon the underlying jazz), Udden's group creates a resolutely new music where eclecticism and personal experience play an important role." - JAZZ MAN (FRANCE) Also described as "an appealingly dreamy roots-jazz combo" (Hank Shteamer, Time Out New York), the group, named for Udden's home town, will release it's first for Fresh Sound New Talent in March, marking Udden's second as a leader for the label.
Acclaimed vocalist Aoife O'Donovan has been turning heads all through the music scene for the past 8 years. Called "Americana's newest darling" by USA today, Aoife is a founding member of newgrass sensations "Crooked Still," with whom she tours the world for most of the year. She is also a member of the folk-noir trio, "Sometymes Why." 2009 has seen Aoife on stages from the Glasgow to San Juan Island to Copenhagen, with stops across Europe, Canada, and the USA in between. Though she doesn't often play shows featuring solely her own material, her quirky original songs have garnered praise worldwide. Originally from Newton, Massachusetts, Aoife has just made the big move to Brooklyn, NY.

Arriving mysteriously in New York City in 2005 with nothing but a suitcase full of sepia-toned memories and a short list of semi-lucid musicians in the hip pocket of her homemade skirt, alice. directed her near-psychotic obsession to find something new into the founding of what has come to be known as the elastic.hybrid.chamber.pop. movement. Calling in a lifetime’s worth of favors and rewriting the concept of Machiavellian coercion in the process, she assembled a mighty ensemble of people that were united in musical vision and inherent fear of saying no. Bringing a unique voice to a unique genre, alice. seeks to continually defy the boundaries of form, harmony, group improvisation, genre, and competitive performance art, delighting her multi-generational audiences with distinctive and memorable original compositions mixed with covers ranging from Beethoven to Spinal Tap. Truly, hers is a voice as extraordinary as it is assertive.

ENTERTAINING SCIENCE -- SHAPES AND ENERGIES: LOVE AND HATE AMONG THE ATOMS
Roald Hoffmann
|

SHAPES AND ENERGIES: LOVE AND HATE AMONG THE ATOMS
Molecules have shapes, and their geometries determine ultimately their every chemical, physical and biological property. Tiny electrons, scooting around the much bulkier atoms, and governed by the lovely logic of quantum mechanics, actually tell those big guys how to arrange themselves. An expert on la liaison chimique, Odile Eisenstein of the University of Montpellier, France, takes us by the hand into the world of molecular shapes, from the simple tetrahedron of methane to the less intuitive world of molecules containing metal atoms. Gerard Parkin, who is rumored to make a living studying such molecules, will do some non-electronic magic. And making shapes, exploring different forms of holding energy together, sometimes in "nonintuitive" ways, will also be expressed in the music of Todd Capp and his quartet (Todd, Bryan Eubanks,
Andrew Lafkas, and Joe Giardullo).

Dapp Theory is a quintet that blends “contemporary funk, groove and hip-hop into jazz with such seamless, casual precision it’s almost freaky.” (LA Weekly) Recipient of Chamber Music America’s New Works commission, French-America Jazz Exchange award, and voted “Rising Star Keyboardist” by Down Beat Magazine, leader, pianist/composer, Andy Milne is one of the most important and respected voices in jazz today. With Dapp Theory, Milne combines the talents of percussive poet John Moon, saxophonist John Beaty, bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Kenny Grohowski, collectively helping to re-draw and extend the boundaries of jazz. Jazz Times Magazine describes the band’s “remarkable chemistry . . . [as] . . . so impeccable, it’s practically a musical Unified Field Theory”.
“Milne and his band Dapp Theory are masters of understatement. … there’s a balance to the music that is tenuous when considered intellectually, but just plain funky when considered physically.”
-Jake TenPas – Albany Democratic Herald
“There's an energy and a passion in their work that transcends genre…”
- Luciana Lopez – The Oregonian

It is quite insouciant to categorize jazz musicians as either composers or
players. But jazz devotees sometimes typecast artists as writers or inter-
preters of music. With a mature talent such as composer/saxophonist
Andrew Rathbun, categorizing him in one camp or the other is unwar-
ranted. With Where We Are Now, his tenth disc as leader, he displays his
growing maturity as a player and more of his acclaimed talents as com-
poser/arranger. The music of Andrew Rathbun draws into the composi-
tion, but requires you to stay for the performance.

TIMUCIN SAHIN 4 CD Release Concert "BAFA"
Timucin Sahin has been recognized as one of today’s truly unique voices of contemporary jazz music by publications such as San Francisco Bay Guardian, AllaboutJazz, Jazzwise and Jazz-Times as well as by many others.
Over the past years, Sahin shared the the stage with musicians such as Randy Brecker, Greg Osby, Mark Turner, Mike Mainieri and many more and won numerous prizes. Both his compositions and his playing on his double-neck guitar – his trademark – radiate an incomparable individualism. His music sounds compassionate, melodic, almost melancholic at times, only to break out into wild, rock-influenced energy in the next moment. You hear an ingenious amalgam of contemporary chamber music,jazz,non-western music influences.
His very rare chamber music works are known for their intense progressivity. He has been commissioned by and composed for Amsterdam Percussion Group,Jorge Isaac,Verso as well as his own chamber group "Occult" which is based in Netherlands.
Sahin will be presenting his latest record "Bafa" on the 4 th of november which features John O' Gallagher, one of the most unique alto saxaphonist in NY scene,Thomas Morgan on bass who is extremely versitile and established in the scene at a very young age, and Tyshawn Sorey on drums who has experienced a meteoric career over the past years and one of the most exiting drummer of our times.
“From Turkey comes Timucin Sahin with his music that shows how
far away from the American tradition jazz has drifted, all the while remaining
vibrant and true to its essence.”
