6:00PM  FAIRY TALES REDUX
Karen Heuler, host

Updated, revised, or turned on their heads, these stories have little to do with fairy godmothers or three wishes, but still have the occasional princess, witch or arduous trial. Modern times make it unlikely that they’ll all have a fairy tale ending, however.

The blend of voice and trumpet, with the transparent underpinning of only bass and the wide -ranging mix of standards, bop tunes, originals and compositions by Don Cherry, Don Pullen and Dannie Richmond make for a special listening experience. Each member of the ensemble contributes a very open, but also a deeply experienced musical voice to the proceedings and Sheila's lyrics, both written and improvised, are not to be missed. Here are four improvisers of the very highest level.

9:00PM & 10:30PM  JOHN HOLLENBECK'S CLAUDIA QUINTET
John Hollenbeck, composition/drums/percussion;  Gary Versace, organ bass;  Ted Reichman, accordion;  Chris Speed, clarinet/tenor sax;  Matt Moran, vibraphone
John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet image
The Claudia Quintet
"For" is the new CD by the Claudia Quintet, the genre-defying band led by Grammy-nominated composer John Hollenbeck. "For" is a positive message. "For" is driving rhythms, beautiful melodies, and passionate virtuosity. "For" is for all music lovers. "For" is also their fourth CD.

Since Hollenbeck first presented the band in an internet cafe on Avenue A in Manhattan in 1997, the Claudia Quintet has amazed audiences from Alabama to the Amazon. Their unique sound has inspired dancing hippie girls at a New Mexico noise festival, the avant-garde cognoscenti in the concert halls of Vienna and Sao Paolo, and a generation of young musicians worldwide. In the course of the thousands of miles they have traveled together and hundreds of concerts they've played, the Claudia Quintet has evolved and grown, developing a dynamic live sound based on trust and spontaneity. They bring this powerful energy into the studio, where they record the old-fashioned way, live, playing as a band. The legions of people who have been won over by the music of the Claudia Quintet live and on CD attest to the fact that genre-defying new music need not be "inaccessible." "For" is for everyone.

Building on the popular and critical success of their previous CD's, "The Claudia Quintet" (CRI, 2001), "I, Claudia" (Cuneiform, 2004), and "Semi-Formal" (Cuneiform, 2005), "For" continues Hollenbeck's startling development as a composer. John Hollenbeck is a leader of a new generation of musicians who have brought together many disparate threads of contemporary music to create a new sound. They embrace the textural freedom of electronic sounds and improvisation, the structural ambition of contemporary classical music, and most importantly, the joy of bodacious grooves and unapologetically gorgeous melodies. In the Claudia Quintet, Hollenbeck has assembled a group of the foremost innovators in this new sound to create a powerhouse band. They are: Drew Gress - bass (Tim Berne, Uri Caine, Ravi Coltrane), Matt Moran - vibraphone (Slavic Soul Party, Mat Maneri, Theo Bleckmann), Ted Reichman - accordion (Anthony Braxton, Marc Ribot, Paul Simon), and Chris Speed - clarinet and tenor saxophone (Human Feel, Bloodcount, Alas No Axis).

“Innovative jazz does not have to be harsh, angry, loud, shrill, or grating; it can be delicate, witty, ethereal, and radiantly lyric, as the Claudia Quintet pointed out...”
[Chicago Tribune]

“...a band with the hippest groove in music today.”
Mark Corroto, allaboutjazz.com

“The Claudia Quintet creates a fresh, distinctive sound while it obliterates barriers between jazz, classical and progressive rock.”

8:30PM  CHARLES EVANS/ERIK DUTKO DUO & BRIAN WOESTEHOFF QUARTET
Charles Evans, baritone saxophone;  Erik Dutko, guitar;  Brian Woestehoff Quartet Brian Woestehoff, saxophone;  Erik Dutko, guitar;  Brian Howell, bass;  Dan Monaghan, drums
8:30PM
The Charles Evans/Erik Dutko Duo explores 20th century harmony utilizing an interesting instrumentation; baritone saxophone and guitar. Their longtime musical partnership has developed into a highly sensitive and intimate musical collaboration. Taking their cue from the explorations of the David Liebman/Richie Beirach duo, Evans and Dutko have developed an approach that combines a post-ECM aesthetic with an economy of note choice. They have reached a maturity that enables them to combine pure sound and melody with complex harmonic shading in both their compositions and improvisations. Evans’s baritone joins the sensitivity and range of John Surman with the chromaticism and fire of Liebman, while Dutko’s guitar colors the melodicist with a pianists’ touch; the linear feel of Keith Jarrett and the sensitivity and restraint of Marc Copland.

“Finding horn players who specialize on baritone sax is rare indeed! That’s why I was so delighted to hear Charles Evans. He’s really got that baritone under control – great stuff! Give this young man’s music a listen- you’ll be hearing more of him on the big horn!”
– John Surman (baritone saxophone great)

10PM Brian Woestehoff Quartet

Organic Chemistry sounds just like the title suggests: Brian Woestehoff and three of Philadelphia's finest jazz musicians came together to create a weaving of engaging melodies and musical interactions. Every idea seems to feed from previous ideas— musical conversations are carried on seamlessly. The compositions, most by Brian himself, serve as ideal vehicles for these improvisational journeys. Brian is featured on tenor and soprano saxophone, and the stalwart Philly rhythm section consists of Erik Dutko on electric guitar, Brian Howell on bass, and Dan Monaghan on drums.

"This really stood out from the glut of mostly sound-alike 'indie-rock' releases that get mailed to Tape Op. The Quartet plays solid jazz of the un-smooth kind....The band has made a timeless, well-recorded CD that will get plenty of listening around the house."

8:30PM  THE JEFF WILLIAMS QUARTET WITH SPECIAL GUEST: PHIL ROBSON.
Jeff Williams, drums;  Duane Eubanks, trumpet;  John O'Gallagher, alto saxophone;  Ben Street, bass;  Phil Robson, guitar
The Jeff Williams Quartet with special guest: Phil Robson. image
The Jeff Williams Quartet with special guest: acclaimed British guitarist Phil Robson

Drummer Jeff Williams (Stan Getz, Dave Liebman/Lookout Farm, Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz) returns to Cornelia St. with his quartet, combining members of two of his long-standing musical associations: Duane Eubanks on trumpet, with whom Williams appears on the recent Bill McHenry Quintet CD “Sonic Pressure” (Fresh Sound/New Talent); and John O’Gallagher on alto saxophone, leader of the group Axiom (“Line of Sight”, Fresh Sound/New Talent), of which Williams is also a member. This performance will employ material from Williams’ “Coalescence” (SteepleChase) and “Jazzblues” (Cathexis) releases, contributions from the rest of the group, and a couple of unusual takes on the more familiar, all with an eye toward open expression. The addition of Phil Robson, who Wayne Krantz has noted is "A disturbingly good jazz guitarist," promises an exceptional night.

"Williams was excellent throughout the evening, his crisp and neatly energetic playing striking the right balance between subtlety and power."
