Dan McCarthy Quintet image
Canadian-born vibraphonist Dan McCarthy became a New Yorker three years ago and has never looked back. His sound, one of the most distinct vibraphone sounds in the city, has been called "ambitious", "arresting", "showstopping", and it "walks the tightrope between calm gentility and fiery abandon" (George Harris, AAJ LA). His debut album, INTERWORDS, was named as one of the Top 10 Jazz CDs of 2006 by Toronto Star jazz writer Geoff Chapman. Since moving to New York, Dan has had the pleasure perform all around New York at venues such as Birdland, The Cornelia Street Cafe, and Kavehaz, with such noted musicians as Myron Walden, Gary Bartz, Robin Eubanks, Ingrid Jensen, and Jeremy Steig. Don't miss this fantastic night of original and swinging music!

Dan "gives new visions of the mallet instrument"

9:00PM & 10:30PM  GNU VOX DOUBLE-BILL: WENDY GILLES AND DAVID DEVOE
Wendy Gilles, voice;  David Devoe, voice;  Brian Seeger, guitar;  Dan Loomis, bass;  Jared Schonig, drums
Gnu Vox Double-Bill: Wendy Gilles and David Devoe image
Vocalist, songwriter and professional church musician Wendy Gilles is a versatile singer whose warm, inviting voice adapts effortlessly to whichever genre she incorporates into her musical vocabulary. She recently completed her Master of Music from New England Conservatory, where she studied with Dominique Eade and John McNeil and was a featured soloist in ensembles led by faculty and guest artists such as Bob Brookmeyer, Dave Holland and Django Bates.

Since moving to New York in 2006, Wendy has been involved as a collaborative artist in many projects and performs regularly as a leader of her own ensemble. She has appeared at such venues as Cornelia Street Café, Rose Live Music, and Via Della Pace singing her original compositions, jazz standards, and eclectic covers with fresh simplicity and sophistication.

"Wendy Gilles is one of the most consistently spot-on singers I've heard. Her voice is lush and welcoming, and her interpretation and improvising convey a musicality and confidence that puts the music first, no matter what she is singing." - Dominique Eade

Vocalist David Devoe has performed with Steve Lacy, Kenny Wheeler, Ben Monder, Ben Street, Butch Morris, The Matt Wilson Quartet, and Mulgrew Miller in venues such as Sweet Rhythm, Joe's Pub, 55 Bar, Regattabar, Ryles, The Maine Jazz Festival, and Jordan Hall. Although heavily immersed in jazz, Devoe incorporates elements from other genres including repertoire by some of his favorite "non-jazz" composers including Patty Larkin, Lori McKenna and Deb Talan.

"Anyone even faintly interested in the craft of jazz vocal performance needs to get out and hear this guy. I believe that, in the realm of the solo vocal, he's the shape of things to come! If not tomorrow, soon! Then, many years from now, you can say to his groupies--I heard him back in the day. It is rare to hear the high art of scatting practiced at such an extreme level of virtuosity and STILL retain its power to express. You will not regret time spent in the presence of David Devoe." - Dr. William Bauer, author of Open the Door: The Life and Music of Betty Carter

CELEBRATE MARK WEINSTEIN’S LATEST RELEASE CON ALMA

First Round Nomination for Best Latin Jazz Record, 50th GRAMMY AWARDS On the charts for 7 weeks and running. #3 in radio play nationwide

An interesting collaboration of mainstream & jazz classics delivered by a master flautist.
- George W. Carroll, The Musicians' Ombudsman, ejazznews

The late great Dizzy Gillespie would be so proud of the way flautist Mark Weinstein presents “Con Alma,” played with finesse and “with soul.” Latin grooves firmly grounded in the Afro-Cuban style. Exciting, engaging and a burner of hot Latin sounds, this album will definitely be a favorite of those who appreciate the essence of good Latin jazz.
Edward Blanco ejazznews

Weinstein and his group cover serious material essential to the jazz tradition. At the same time, they establish themselves as composers and active participants in the music’s history. The group commits itself to a serious exploration of jazz and Latin music.

Kim Bock Quartet image
From All About Jazz - Tom Greenland review:
"A chordless quartet, the group manifests cohesive rapport, creative tension and rapprochement, all of a piece. Bock’s compositions are ideal jump-off points for group flight, with subtle counterpoint lines and pointillistic exchanges, containing just enough harmonic scaffolding to keep the painters from falling, yet allowing ample room for creative brushstrokes.
