Robin, Angelo, Poul, and David, hosts

This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.

Pete Zimmer Group image
Judgment marks the third album by drummer Pete Zimmer and his quintet. This album, along with their two previous releases, distinguishes the Pete Zimmer Quintet as one of the premier upcoming straight ahead jazz groups of the early 21st century. Since the release of their debut CD, Common Man, in September of 2004, which was called an “impressive debut” by the Philadelphia Daily News, they have been captivating audiences with their hard swing and moving melodies as they keep busy performing at some of the most prestigious jazz venues along the East Coast and Midwest. Zimmer’s second album, Burnin’ Live at the Jazz Standard, was recorded live at Manhattan’s Jazz Standard on February 7, 2006. All Music Guide has recently stated that they could be “the best kept secret in straight ahead jazz circa 2006.”

"Judgment is packed with memorable pieces, including a pair of edgy, show-stopping duo numbers, with Garzone and Zimmer sparring like they'd been doing so forever…"Cut Off" is a Jazz Messenger-style tune featuring engaging turns by Frahm, trumpeter Michael Rodriguez, Dodo and Zimmer that leaves listeners wanting more."

6:00PM  ENTERTAINING SCIENCE -- SEACHANGE: REVERSING THE TIDE
Roald Hoffmann

Entertaining Science -- SeaChange: Reversing the Tide image
SeaChange: Reversing the Tide is a dramatic lecture devised, written and presented by scientist, Roger Payne and his wife, actress Lisa Harrow. SeaChange weaves the knowledge of science and the wisdom of poetry into a compelling presentation arguing that the human species is not the overseer of life but an integral part of life’s complex web, and that our survival requires that we attend not just to our own well-being, but also, to the well-being of that entire web of life.

SeaChange: Reversing the Tide blends the poetry of Shakespeare, Shelley, Robert Frost, Wendell Berry, Gary Snyder, Mary Oliver and others with a clear exposition of the consequences of our current indifference to Natural Laws and the benefits that can be achieved by living in accordance with those laws.

8:30PM  JASON RIGBY QUARTET
Jason Rigby , saxophones;  Mike Holober, Rhodes;  Thomas Morgan, bass;  Jeff Davis, drums
Jason Rigby Quartet image
"Diverse program" is sometimes a euphemism for "hodge-podge," but the young reed player's Translucent Space accounts for all its esthetic zig-zags. Allusions to electric jazz and classical motifs snuggle next to free-bop jaunts and hard- driving swing. Rigby plays as it lays, and does so with élan."
- Jim Macnie, NYC VILLAGE VOICE (Dec. 06)

"I'd go so far as to say that Translucent Space is the freshest and most individual jazz album of the year so far; it lets light through but in such a way that the antecedents and influences are sensed diffusely rather than clearly seen."
- Brian Morton, UK JAZZ REVIEW (Sept. 06)

"Translucent Space" (Fresh Sound-New Talent), the new album by the saxophonist and bass clarinetist Jason Rigby, doesn't come by its name casually; it's an album of airy, often diaphanous music, with faint echoes of early fusion and Third Stream. Mr. Rigby plays here with the album's rhythm section of Mike Holober on piano, Cameron Brown on bass and Mark Ferber on drums. At 8:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Cafe."
- Nate Chinen, NEW YORK TIMES (June 06)
