ARTISTS’ SALON
This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.

After a successful return to leading his own group last November, Carlo DeRosa
will be performing at The Cornelia Street Café. This promises to be another great night of
music and the stellar ensemble will once again bring the bassist’s original compositions to
life. Their collective musical credentials reads like a “Who’s Who of Jazz.”
Performing at many music festivals, clubs and concert halls around the world, Carlo
DeRosa collaborates with many great artists and projects including: Dave Allen, Ravi
Coltrane, Chembo Corniel and Grupo Chaworo, Tyshawn Sorey, Sam Newsome, Vijay Iyer,
Agrazing Maze with Allison Miller and Ingrid Jensen, Justin Flynn, Lucian Ban, Victor Prieto
and Rudresh Mahanthappa. He has had the opportunity to work with jazz luminaries such
as Ed Thigpen, John Scofield, Nick Brignola, Mickey Roker, Bruce Barth, Warren Bernhardt,
Ray Barretto, Bertha Hope, and George Garzone. Proficient, creative, clearly an in demand
bassist, Carlo DeRosa is earning a reputation of very high standards.
Mark Shim was an integral part of bands led by jazz legends Betty Carter and
Elvin Jones. At the same time he is comfortable exploring the contemporary and modern
jazz concepts of Michele Rosewoman and the “New Directions” band with Greg Osby,
Stefon Harris and Jason Moran.
Luis Perdomo has displayed his talents as a regular member of groups led by
John Benítez, Miguel Zenón, Ray Barretto and Ravi Coltrane. His work with artists such as
John Patitucci, Claudia Acuna, Dave Samuels and Butch Morris adds to a list that is notable
through its quality and diversity.
Derrek Phillips currently plays with the Charlie Hunter Trio. Having worked
regularly with a diverse group of artists including: Ronny Jordan, Greg Osby, Michele
Rosewoman, Liberty Ellman, Jason Moran, Sam Newsome and Vijay Iyer among others, he

SKYE STEELE GROUP
Skye Steele, violin;
Christopher Hoffman, cello;
Mike Effenberger, piano;
Mike Savino, bass;
John Hadfield, drums/percussion
|
|
|
Skye Steele’s group bears the
mark of its leader’s strong balance between the
eclecticism of his experiences as a side-man and the
strident individualism of his approach to the violin.
His arrangements bring American popular songs of his
own generation crashing head-on with influences
ranging from Turkish Gypsy music, to Afro-Brazilian,
to French Impressionism, all with a rigorous Modern
Jazz aesthetic (he taps Simon and Garfunkle, Sesame
Street, Satie, and Willie Wonka). Skye’s own
compositions combine driving, angular rhythms and
darkly nuanced harmonies with an infectious sense of
lyricism. “My goal is always to engage and transport
the people with every tune and every solo.”
“Steele makes his instrument sing joyously”

DARWIN’S BIRTHDAY BASH
So it’s a week early…. But Darwin and evolution are in the air. And in the courts. JONATHAN WEINER, the author of “The Beak of the Finch,” tells some war stories from the people who actually watch evolution happen, anthropologist and entertainer RICHARD MILNER will try out some brash new songs on evolution, and master magician MARK MITTON will treat us to an “Evolution in Action” show. Now you can find out where those rabbits really come from!
At 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006 it is, in Roald Hoffmann's Entertaining Science cabaret at the Cornelia Street Cafe (in the Village, at 29 Cornelia Street between Bleecker and W. 4th; Christopher St. is probably the nearest subway stop). 212-989-9319. See their website at... oh, wait — you're on it. Admission $10.

NYNDK JAZZ COLLECTIVE

Francois Moutin, bass

|
A Trans-Atlantic collective bringing together musicians from New York (NY), Norway (N),
and Denmark (DK), uniting three
places that have significant roles in jazz history. Established in 2003, its founding
members are Danish pianist Soren Moller,
Norwegian saxophonist Ole Mathisen, and American trombonist Chris Washburne. Their
decision to form this collaborative
was inspired by their own experiences of the truly international nature of jazz. NYNDK
brings to the mix a combination of
refined Scandinavian cool with aggressive New York heat spiced with a progressive
postmodern sensibility.
"Since jazz is an international language, it is little surprise how well the Americans,
Norwegians and Danes play together on this
modern mainstream set. Both trumpeter Ray Vega and trombonist Chris Washburne are
known for being superior hard bop
players. However the biggest surprise in the group and on the CD is the Norweigian
saxophonist Ole Mathisen. Whether on
tenor or soprano, Mathisen tears into the music and consistently steals solo honors; check
out his stirring soprano playing on
"Theostopher." In addition to the sextet's skillful soloists (which include pianist Soren
Moller), the composing and arranging
abilities of the band are strong assets. Both "Everything Happens To Me" (which becomes a
jazz waltz) and Duke Ellington's
moody "Azure" are reshaped into new tunes while the group originals, although tied to the
straightahead jazz tradition, have
their share of memorable moments. Recommended."
