Skye Steele’s group bears the
mark of its leader’s strong balance between the
eclecticism of his experiences as a side-man and the
strident individualism of his approach to the violin.
His arrangements bring American popular songs of his
own generation crashing head-on with influences
ranging from Turkish Gypsy music, to Afro-Brazilian,
to French Impressionism, all with a rigorous Modern
Jazz aesthetic (he taps Simon and Garfunkle, Sesame
Street, Satie, and Willie Wonka). Skye’s own
compositions combine driving, angular rhythms and
darkly nuanced harmonies with an infectious sense of
lyricism. “My goal is always to engage and transport

A Trans-Atlantic collective bringing together musicians from New York (NY), Norway (N),
and Denmark (DK), uniting three
places that have significant roles in jazz history. Established in 2003, its founding
members are Danish pianist Soren Moller,
Norwegian saxophonist Ole Mathisen, and American trombonist Chris Washburne. Their
decision to form this collaborative
was inspired by their own experiences of the truly international nature of jazz. NYNDK
brings to the mix a combination of
refined Scandinavian cool with aggressive New York heat spiced with a progressive
postmodern sensibility.
"Since jazz is an international language, it is little surprise how well the Americans,
Norwegians and Danes play together on this
modern mainstream set. Both trumpeter Ray Vega and trombonist Chris Washburne are
known for being superior hard bop
players. However the biggest surprise in the group and on the CD is the Norweigian
saxophonist Ole Mathisen. Whether on
tenor or soprano, Mathisen tears into the music and consistently steals solo honors; check
out his stirring soprano playing on
"Theostopher." In addition to the sextet's skillful soloists (which include pianist Soren
Moller), the composing and arranging
abilities of the band are strong assets. Both "Everything Happens To Me" (which becomes a
jazz waltz) and Duke Ellington's
moody "Azure" are reshaped into new tunes while the group originals, although tied to the
straightahead jazz tradition, have
their share of memorable moments. Recommended."

Beat Kaestli moved to New York from his native Switzerland at age twenty and
received a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music. While honing his craft alongside
young Jazz noteworthys like Jane Monheit, Stefon Harris and Jason Moran, he immersed
himself in Manhattan's fiercely competitive music scene, emerging as a seasoned
performer. He now appears in clubs such as Birdland, The Bitter End and B.B. King¹s and in
2005, Beat was the chosen vocalist for the Glenn Miller Orchestra, thrilling audiences in
concert halls across the USA.
'Happy, Sad and Satisfied' is Beat's sophomore release, featuring some of New York's
most eminent young Jazz musicians, and is already receiving great reviews from critics

Italian American Writers Association, featured readers are: Antonio D'Alfonso + Gil Fagiani, plus open mic, 5 minute limit.
Antonio D'Alfonso, of Montreal, Canada is president and founder of Guernica Press, which has published more than 300 titles and 500 authors from around the world since its inception 26 years ago in 1978. Gil Fagiani, one of IAWA's program coordinators, will be reading from several works including his latest chapbook, Rooks, published by Rain Mountain Press in 2005, from his earlier work, Crossing 116th St.: A Blanquito in El Barrio and from an upcoming collection.
Known to many primarily as a publisher, Antonio D'Alfonso, is also an award-winning filmmaker and author who writes in both English and French. Last summer he was received the Trillium Award for its latest novel written in French, D'Alfonso has alternately worked as a literary critic, and has produced a number of short films. D'Alfonso often addresses conferences on literature, films and multiculturalism.
He and a group of writers developed Vice Versa, a trilingual magazine and established the Canadian Italian Writers Association in 1982. In 2002, his poetry collection Comment ça se passé or How it Went was a finalist for the Trillium Award, which he won in 2005 for his novel Un vendredi du mois d'août or One Friday in August. Guernica Press has published works by many Italian American writers including Mary Jo Bona, Fred Gardaphe, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Anthony Valerio and Robert Viscusi and the recent publication of Luigi Bonaffini's translation of Mario Luzi's Phrases and Passages of a Salutary Song.
Gil Fagiani has had what seems to be an endless array of lives: from the streets of Villa Avenue in the Bronx to the idyllic suburbs of Connecticut to Pennsylvania Military College and to East Harlem in the 1960s. His new work, Rooks, published by Rain Mountain Press, focuses on those volatile years he spent in military college, where his political evolution took him to the streets of El Barrio, the focus of his earlier collection, Crossing 116th St.: A Blanquito in El Barrio published by Skidrow Penthouse. He recently won honorable mention for both the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards and the coveted Bordighera Prize. Fagiani also translates Italian dialect and the modern poetry of three North African immigrants living in Italy due to be published this year in A Bilingual Anthology of Italian Migrant Poetry. By day, Fagiani is a social worker and director of a substance abuse rehabilitation program in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
