8:30 - Trudy Silver (piano); Scottie Davis (mime)

Pianist/composer, Trudy Silver, and mime/actress Scottie Davis, interact in controlled improvisations which reflect visual/aural images of social and political realities.

Trudy Silver has been a pianist/composer/educator for 30 years and has recorded and performed with Anthony Braxton, Roy Campbell and Makanda Ken McIntyre to name a few. She is co-founder of the 5C Cafe and Cultural Center in Manhattan.
Scottie Davis was awarded Messina, Italy's 'Great Artist' award. As founder and director of the Salt and Pepper Mime Company, she is recognized as one of the leading African American mime artists in the world.

9:30 - Laylage Courie (actor/singer); Matt Moran (vibraphone)

Performer, playwright and singer, Laylage Courie and percussionist, Matt Moran on vibraphone will perform excerpts from "Sequence from the Solstice," playing with Courie’s image-driven sea poems, Courie & Moran make a moody, sexy sound- world that’s part art-song, part improvisation: an extravagant reverie on Venus rising, windward birds, glass fish, and drowned men.

”Big Bang”, a new music and mixed media series every third Monday of the month is the creative collision of musicians with artists in spoken word, dance, visual art, video art, found words, theatre, etc. presenting works in progress. The evenings will include two featured groups followed by a brief talk back with the audience after each set. Every evening ends by inviting audience members to join in an informal jam session for about 10 minutes.

David Evanier "The Great Kisser" (Novel Excerpt)

Marian Sillman "Untitled" (Novel Excerpt)

Lauren Yaffe "Distant Home" (Novel Excerpt)

Paul Gregory Himmelein "Blood Oranges" (Novel Excerpt)

DAVID EVANIER: David Evanier's novel, The Great Kisser, will be published in the fall. He is a recipient of the Aga Khan Fiction Prize and his work has appeared in "Best American Short Stories." He is a former fiction editor of The Paris Review. He has published three other novels: The One-Star Jew, Red Love, and The Swinging Headhunter. His current book is Roman Candle: The Life of Bobby Darin. He also wrote Making the Wiseguys Weep: The Jimmy Roselli Story, and co-authored Who's Sorry Now with Joe Pantoliano. He has written for The New York Times Magazine, The Paris review, TriQuarterly, New American Writing, Chelsea, Saint Ann's Review, The Antioch Review, Other Voices, River Oak Review, Pequod, Beloit Fiction Journal, and many other journals.

MARIAN SILLMAN: Marian Sillman graduated from Boston College, phi beta kappa with an English Literature degree. Of her upcoming novel she says, "The plot runs a little like Jack Kerouac in an age with very little beat, more like loud clashes surrounded by some deafening silences, but definitely an on the road type. It has the feel of a memoir but is very much first person fiction, set in the present with memories interrupting and juxtaposing time frames and context."

LAUREN YAFFE: Lauren Yaffe holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College. Her stories, essays and poems have appeared in such publications as Cottonwood, Alaska Quarterly, Calliope, Frigate, and most recently in the newly- released anthology, Voices From The Spectrum: Parents…Of People With Autism…Share Their Wisdom. She is currently working on an animation screenplay about worms. That's right. Worms.

PAUL GREGORY HIMMELEIN: Bohemian Manifesto co-author, Paul Gregory Himmelein is the recipient of a Ludwig Vogelstein Grant for fiction and a Hawthornden Fellowship for fiction. His award-winning short story, “Misbegotten,” was published last year in the Swedish anthology Love/Crazy along with work by Christian Lacroix and Sonia Rykiel. He is completing his first novel, Blood Oranges. It is set in the late 18th century and uses only vocabulary presented in Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language (1755) and Francis Grose’s dictionary of slang, The Vulgar Tongue (1785).

The Writers Room readings are supported by the Jerome Foundation, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

8:30PM  JOHN MCNEIL CELEBRATES NEW CD “EAST COAST COOL”
John McNeil, trumpet;  Allan Chase, baritone saxophone;  John Hebert, bass;  John Hollenbeck, drums
John McNeil CELEBRATES NEW CD “EAST COAST COOL” image
"Critic’s Pick. Mr. McNeil wants to unlock the neat, airy, compressed feeling of the Mulligan quartet; he wants to open it up to modern possibilities. And he wants the music at least half planted on the ground…. the wonder of the record is its breezy transparency …. And Mr. Chase, filling Mulligan’s role, does the most to seal the record’s connection to what inspired it: he plays with balance and authority…"
— Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

“4-stars. Trumpeter and composer John McNeil is an original thinker. He's short on flash but long on substance, with a disciplined command of harmony that doesn't squelch his melodic intuition or loose phrasing. Plus, he's got one of the most lethal dry wits in or out of jazz.”
— Mark Stryker, Detroit Free Press

Join trumpeter/composer John McNeil and his Quartet — New Bop-channeling saxophonist Allan Chase on baritone, vibrantly flexible bassist John Hebert and virtuoso drummer/composer John Hollenbeck — as they celebrate the release of McNeil’s new CD “East Coast Cool” (OmniTone, January 2006) in concert on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 at Cornelia Strret Cafe.

Hot on the heels of his previous two acclaimed OmniTone releases, “East Coast Cool” represents McNeil's breakthrough merging of the classic "West Coast cool" sound of the Gerry Mulligan-Chet Baker Quartet with an edgier East Coast jazz sensibility.

The music of “East Coast Cool” is sophisticated, but there is a swinging simplicity and sense of play that any listener will enjoy. McNeil’s group delights contemporary audiences as the sounds of the Mulligan/ Baker Quartet thrilled audiences in the ’50s.
