XAVIER CASELLAS NY QUARTET image
Xavier Casellas – introducing YESTERDAY’S SUN (Fresh Sound Records – 2005) for the first time in New York City.

A voice that’s driven by subtle emotion, embracing both tradition and a contemporary standpoint in today’s jazz scene alike is the pivoting centre around which the excellent arrangements by pianist-composer Emilio Solla revolve.
Instrumental classics such as “Prism” by Keith Jarrett or more recent cult compositions like “So it seems” by Chris Cheek become originally articulated pieces of vibrant vocalese in the latest CD release by Xavier Casellas, YESTERDAY’S SUN.
Xavier Casellas emerges also as a skilled vocalese writer on his own right to deliver meaningful lyrics in such a way that one would think they had been there all along. One of the most beautiful pieces in Emilio Solla’s latest CD “Sentido” (Fresh Sound -2004) “Las últimas pipas”, becomes the compelling new track “Last one’s for the road”, through verbalizing all its melancholy.
Along with these, the record explores freshly conceived versions of classic standards such as “My ship” (Weill-Gershwin) or “In the wee small hours...” by Mann/Hilliard, and also a bunch of not so usual songs by Gino Vannelli or James Taylor. Colorful stuff.

“Xavier Casellas is coming up strong as one of the few europeen male voices aspiring to leave a deep footprint in the contemporay jazz scene.”
Pere Pons – AVUI DAILY (Spanish Newspaper)   www.xaviercasellas.com www.emiliosolla.com

We get a lot of poetry that just arrives and asks to be read. Oddly we read it. Strange to say, some of it is a delight. Occasionally we combine a few of these unsolicited gems and their makers into program. These 3 poets deserve a wider audience. Enjoy them ! - Angelo Verga

Elliott Sharp's Limbic Trio image

ELLIOTT SHARP'S LIMBIC TRIO - PREMIERE PERFORMANCE - APRIL 1 - CORNELIA ST. CAFE

While mainly known as a guitarist, composer Elliott Sharp is also a virtuosic saxophonist whose playing stretches back to the early 1970's. While as unique and idiosyncratic as his approach to guitar, E#'s hornwork also displays the influence of Albert Ayler, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, John Coltrane, Lester Young, Wayne Shorter, Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Ben Webster, Archie Shepp, and Eric Dolphy. Sharp has created a unique trio music, true to his compositional vision, but rooted in jazz and contemporary music and featuring bassist Brad Jones and drummer Donald McKenzie.

Since coming to NY in the early 90s, bassist Kevin Ray has become increasingly in demand, performing with John Stubblefield, Oliver Lake, Andrew Hill, Pheeroan Aklaff, Marty Ehrlich, Curtis Fowlkes, and many others.

Drummer Donald McKenzie has grooved with the likes of rappers P. Diddy, Rahzel, Gravediggaz, New Kingdom, and Mike Ladd; bashed with rockers Vernon Reid, Martin Luther, Cody Chestnutt, Chocolate Genius and 3 Feet Deep; and finessed with rhythm & blues stars The Persuaders, Sweetback, Stewart Matthewmann, John Legend, Allure and Ambersunshower, as well as improvised with jazz icons like Roswell Rudd.

"Blue Walls" is more than the name of a tune and my CD. It is a concept in which everything we play is 'bounced' off of The Blues. Billie, Wes and Cannonball are perfect examples of the essence of this spirit. We will interpret this spirit in our own way, using our own music mixed with compositions from others writing against Blue Walls.”   www.marc-bernstein.dk

Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys image
Klezmer clarinetist Margot Leverett joins forces with today’s stars of klezmer and bluegrass to explore the shared musical spirit of two genres literally worlds apart. Appalachian and southern fiddle tunes by Bill Monroe meet klezmer melodies from pre-war Russia and Eastern Europe, some newly discovered, and the resulting medleys and improvisations are at once raw, funny, melancholic and footstomping. Their CD "Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys" was released to glowing reviews on Traditional Crossroads in September 2003 and has been used by the Paul Taylor Dance Company in their new piece "Klezmerbluegrass".
