Gabriel Gudding is the
author of two books, A Defense of Poetry (Pitt Poetry Series,2002) and
rhode island notebook (Dalkey Archive Press, 2008), the latter being a
mixed genre work he wrote entirely in his car during 25 roundtrips o
the highways between Providence, RI and Normal, IL.
His work appears in such venues as New American Writing, LIT, Fence,
American Poetry Review, Sentence, Jacket, and in such anthologies as
Great American Prose Poems: From Poe to the Present (Scribner, 2003).
David Lehman is the author of "When a Woman Loves a Man" (poems), co-author with Jim Cummins of "Jim and Dave Defeat the Masked Man" ( sestinas), editor of "The Oxford Book of American Poetry" (April 2006), and series editor of "The Best American Poetry."
Amy King is the author of the poetry collection, Antidotes for an Alibi (Blazvox Books), a Lambda Book Award finalist, and the chapbook, The People Instruments (Pavement Saw Press Chapbook Award 2002). She teaches Creative Writing and English at Nassau Community College on Long Island and a workshop of her own design, Making the Urban Poetic, at Poets House in Manhattan Amy King is the managing editor for the journal, MiPOesias, and occasionally conducts interviews with poets for MiPOradio. Renku is a two and half-year old working trio featuring New York-based
saxophonist/composer Michaël Attias, bassist John Hebert and

exploratory journeys through a wide range of repertoire including compositions by Attias,

While mainly known as a guitarist, composer Elliott Sharp is also a
virtuosic saxophonist whose playing stretches back to the early
1970's. While as unique and idiosyncratic as his approach to guitar,
E#'s hornwork also displays the influence of Albert Ayler, Sonny
Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, John Coltrane,
Lester Young,
Wayne Shorter, Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Ben Webster, Archie
Shepp, and Eric Dolphy. Sharp has created a unique trio
music, true to his compositional vision, but rooted in jazz and
contemporary music and featuring bassist Brad Jones and drummer
Donald McKenzie.
Since coming to NY in the early 90s, bassist Kevin Ray has become
increasingly in demand, performing with John Stubblefield, Oliver Lake, Andrew Hill,
Pheeroan Aklaff, Marty Ehrlich, Curtis Fowlkes, and many others.
Drummer Donald McKenzie has grooved with the likes of rappers P.
Diddy, Rahzel, Gravediggaz, New Kingdom, and Mike Ladd; bashed with
rockers Vernon Reid, Martin Luther, Cody Chestnutt, Chocolate Genius
and 3 Feet Deep; and finessed with rhythm & blues stars The
Persuaders, Sweetback, Stewart Matthewmann, John Legend, Allure and
Ambersunshower, as well as improvised with jazz icons like Roswell
Rudd.

Daniel Conrad, an award-winning filmmaker from Vancouver, will show us his two most recent films -- one bearing the title of this program, the other, "7 Universal Solvents." Both feature contemporary New York and Canadian dancers, and forces of nature. René Hen, who studies genetic models of anxiety and depression, will tell us of mutant mice and chimeras in modern biology. And friends will read some apposite poems by Wislawa Szymborska.

Klezmer clarinetist Margot Leverett joins forces with today’s stars of klezmer
and bluegrass to explore the shared
musical spirit of two genres literally worlds apart. Appalachian and southern fiddle tunes
by Bill Monroe meet klezmer
melodies from pre-war Russia and Eastern Europe, some newly discovered,
and the resulting medleys and improvisations are at once raw, funny,
melancholic and footstomping. Their CD "Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain
Boys" was released to glowing reviews on Traditional Crossroads in September 2003
and has been used by the Paul Taylor Dance Company in their new piece
"Klezmerbluegrass".

This evening features a very special meeting of new and old friends. Jazzlegend and
master improviser saxofonist Oliver Lake is reunited with guitar wizard
Michael Gregory Jackson. In the late 70´s and early 80´s they cut a sting of
classic albums together with Pheeron ak´Laff changing the sound of the sax/guitar/
drums trio format (Bill Frisell has cited Michael Gregory jackson as an influence). Since
then Lake has been very active playing with the World Saxophone Quartet, Me´shell
Ndegeochello and others and recorded dosens of classic albums as a leader. Michael
Gregory Jackson dissapeared from the New York scene for many years and this is a rare
chance to see him perform his highly personal guitarstyle in the city.
This event it is the last in a series at of concerts at Cornelia Street Cafe centered around
Danish drummer/composer Kresten Osgood. Osgood, one of Scandinavias most
active playes and a leader of the vibrant improvised music scene in Copenhagen, has
collaborated with such diverse musicians as Sam Rivers, Derek Bailey, Kurt Rosenwinkel,
Tim Berne, Steven Bernstein, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Michael Blake.
A very special meeting of generations, old and new friends. Don´t miss it.
