The Flail image
The Flail is a unique entity in today's world of jazz, even music as a whole. They offer a repertoire of original compositions and arrangements full of intensity and imagination. From the first moment one experiences The Flail, it is clear that this group is a band in every sense of the word. The kind of energy that such unity creates cannot be faked, nor can the power of it be denied. Upon hearing them, jazz legend Kenny Barron said,"I would pay good money to see these guys play at a jazz club."

The Flail have performed at some of the premier events and venues in the world including Carnegie Hall, the Vienne Jazz Festival, the Marseille Jazz Festival, and Sweet Rhythm.

‘Global Motion is always in stylistic motion, spanning bop, ECM-esque soundscapes and free-form chamber dreams……’ – Ed Enright, DOWNBEAT

‘A fearless improviser on both tenor and soprano, Mommaas had the ability and sense of spontaneous composition to start from almost nothing and build solos that were alive with energy and commitment, fairly bristling with power…..’

Wolfgang Schalk Quartet image
Celebrating the new album "Space Messengers" (Universal Music)

Wolfgang Schalk has garnered international acclaim as a gifted guitarist and composer. The sound of the Austrian guitarist, resident in New York since 1997, conveys a tender warmth that is always present in spite of high speeds in bebop as well as funky pieces.

"Space Messengers" features an impressive line-up of notable musicians, including Dave Kikoski on piano, Andy McKee on bass and Ian Froman on drums. With this same band Schalk released "Rainbows in the Night" in 2002 which received enthusiastic praise from journalists, musical peers and fans alike.

AllAboutJazz writes about "Space Messengers":
"Wolfgang Schalk proves to be an explosively inventive guitarist and a gifted, challenging composer. Backed by an alert, vibrant rhythm section, he digs deep into eight original compositions, improvising with considerable intelligence, passion, and swing... Yet, as good as these guitar solos are (and they are very, very good), the compositions themselves are what first catch the ear... If other musicians pick up on these tunes, every single one of them has the potential to become a jazz standard... Highly recommended."
