LET'S FLY AWAY
John McWhorter, vocals;
Sheldon Forrest, piano
"LET'S FLY AWAY," the cabaret show featuring singer John McWhorter with pianist Sheldon Forrest, takes its name from an infrequently-performed song excerpted from Cole Porter's 1930 musical "The New Yorkers." And, in fact, audiences will be treated to a full hour of lesser-known Porter melodies and lyrics. From bright, energetic numbers like "I'm Throwing A Ball Tonight" and "Can Can," to romantic ballads such as "Where Have You Been" and "Looking At You," to latin-tinged numbers like "So Near And Yet So Far" and "A Little Rumba Numba," as well as other seldom-heard but curiously charming material, this show offers a refreshing alternative to sets of better-known songs. John McWhorter is well known as a professor, author, and commentator who appears frequently on NPR, Fox, MSNBC & C-Span. What is less well known--except to his friends--is that he is also an aficionado and informal scholar of the more obscure corners of the American Songbook, and of the finer points of its forgotten-yet-delightful repertoire. He is joined on the piano by Sheldon Forrest, a longtime professional piano-bar entertainer & cabaret musical director with a background in musical theater and music education. The two have joined forces in the recent past at the Cornelia Street Café and at Danny's Skylight Room with the well-favored show "WHAT'S THAT YOU'RE WHISTLING?" which featured lesser-known Harry Warren and other of his Golden-Era contemporaries. This time, the focus is squarely on the inimitable Cole Porter, and on bringing that old master's neglected musical gems out of the attic so that they may sparkle and surprise once more.

NEW POEMS
Angelo Verga, host
Joel Allegretti's new collection of poems, "Father Silicon," from The Poet's Press. To see the cover design and a description of the book, please visit the publisher's website, www.thepoetspress.org.
I’ve always admired the Gaudi-esque invention of Allegretti’s voice. These poems are architectures, webs and prayers. Their volatility and wit never harden into irony. Read “Anointing of the Sick” and then “Poem for the Apocalypse” for the range this book travels. Father Silicon is a challenge and a thrill.
