8:30PM  MARGOT LEVERETT AND THE KLEZMER MOUNTAIN BOYS
Margot Leverett, clarinet;  Marthy Confurius, bass;  Joe Selly, guitar;  Kenny Kosek, fiddle
Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys image
Klezmer clarinetist Margot Leverett joins forces with today’s stars of klezmer and bluegrass to explore the shared musical spirit of two genres literally worlds apart. Appalachian and southern fiddle tunes by Bill Monroe meet klezmer melodies from pre-war Russia and Eastern Europe, some newly discovered, and the resulting medleys and improvisations are at once raw, funny, melancholic and footstomping. Their CD "Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys" was released to glowing reviews on Traditional Crossroads in September 2003 and has been used by the Paul Taylor Dance Company in their new piece "Klezmerbluegrass".

6:00PM  ARTISTS’ SALON
Robin Hirsch, host

This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe--from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. All are welcome.
8:30PM  KRESTEN OSGOOD GROUP
Oliver Lake, saxophone;  Michael Gregory Jackson, guitar;  Kresten Osgood, drums
Kresten Osgood group image
This evening features a very special meeting of new and old friends. Jazzlegend and master improviser saxofonist Oliver Lake is reunited with guitar wizard Michael Gregory Jackson. In the late 70´s and early 80´s they cut a sting of classic albums together with Pheeron ak´Laff changing the sound of the sax/guitar/ drums trio format (Bill Frisell has cited Michael Gregory jackson as an influence). Since then Lake has been very active playing with the World Saxophone Quartet, Me´shell Ndegeochello and others and recorded dosens of classic albums as a leader. Michael Gregory Jackson dissapeared from the New York scene for many years and this is a rare chance to see him perform his highly personal guitarstyle in the city.

This event it is the last in a series at of concerts at Cornelia Street Cafe centered around Danish drummer/composer Kresten Osgood. Osgood, one of Scandinavias most active playes and a leader of the vibrant improvised music scene in Copenhagen, has collaborated with such diverse musicians as Sam Rivers, Derek Bailey, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tim Berne, Steven Bernstein, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Michael Blake. A very special meeting of generations, old and new friends. Don´t miss it.

"an uptempo, highly energized melange of hardcore, free bop, and more"
- Glenn Astarita All About Jazz

"...you can hear Archie Shepp and Lucky Thompson and Coltrane and Dewey Redman in Mr. Blake, and the group sounds great while playing what it wants to."
- Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

Michael Blake, saxophonist, composer and arranger has established a commanding presence in the jazz idiom. His work gracefully erases the borders between fields of music. In 2002 he was recognized in Downbeat Magazine’s 50th Annual Critics Poll for Talent Deserving Wider Recognition categories for tenor sax, soprano sax and jazz artist of the year. He was also sighted as a "new jazz star" in the July 2002 issue of US World News Report.

Described by JAZZ TIMES as “perhaps THE most innovative straight-ahead jazz guitarist to emerge in years,” Rory Stuart brings his quartet with tenor saxophonist Mark Shim, acoustic bassist Chris Tordini, and drummer Ari Hoenig to the Cornelia Street Café on Saturday, April 8, 2006.

Rory Stuart has performed as a sideman with a remarkable range of jazz artists, from Charlie Rouse to Errol Parker, Steve Coleman’s Five Elements with Cassandra Wilson and Geri Allen to the Cadence All Stars, and has led highly-praised Quartets of his own. 8:30PM  ARMEN DONELIAN QUINTET
Armen Donelian, piano, composer;  Marc Mommaas, tenor saxophone;  Mike Moreno, guitar;  Arthur Kell, bass;  Tyshawn Sorey, drums
Armen Donelian Quintet image
“A pianist with a crystalline touch but a penchant for avant-gardism” (New York Times), Armen Donelian appears globally as soloist, band leader, Grammy-nominated composer, Fulbright Scholar, NEA Fellow, author and professor. Showcasing a new band and several new arrangements, Donelian will take the stage at Cornelia Street Café on Sunday, April 9 for 2 sets with Marc Mommaas (saxophone) to celebrate the release of their new CD, All Or Nothing At All (Sunnyside), with Mike Moreno (guitar), Arthur Kell (bass) and Tyshawn Sorey (drums).

Has the allure of chamber music while still preserving the resources of a powerful drive...The world of Armen Donelian is irreducible in the game of influences. The ear is never left to amuse itself, so great is the diversity of the written and improvised works and the coherence of the repertory which guides us from beginning to end in a permanent state of wonder.

8:30PM  COMPOSERSCOLLABORATIVE PRESENTS SERIAL UNDERGROUND THE 2ND MONDAY OF THE MONTH
Gerald Busby, composer & actor;  Miranda Cuckson, violin;  Jed Distler, piano & composer;  Blair McMillen, piano;  Ed Schmidt, playwright;  Arnold Barkus, director;  David Lovett, lighting design
ComposersCollaborative presents Serial Underground the 2nd Monday of the month image
Allan Kozinn (New York Times) contextualizes SERIAL UNDERGROUND, CCi’s monthly performances in the basement of the Cornelia Street Cafe – “Informal performances of concert works were part of the musical ecology, and to some extent part of the ecology of urban night life as well. That tradition lasted into the 20th century, when ... “serious music” reserved the concert hall as its home, and jazz (and later other popular forms) took its place at street level. ... Composers Collaborative and its inventive artistic director, the composer and pianist Jed Distler, have decided that this [lost] intimacy [between listeners and performers] is worth recapturing.”

SERIAL #15 presents us with the family history of our disgruntled protagonist in The Gold Standard (excerpt) by Jed Distler and Ed Schmidt (The Last Supper); Miranda Cuckson and Blair McMillen play music of Ralph Shapey, Paul Schoenfield and Daniel Bernard Roumain; plus monologuing composer Gerald Busby.
