Described by JAZZ TIMES as “perhaps THE most innovative straight-ahead jazz guitarist to emerge in years,” Rory Stuart brings his quartet with tenor saxophonist Mark Shim, acoustic bassist Chris Tordini, and drummer Ari Hoenig to the Cornelia Street Café on Saturday, April 8, 2006.

Rory Stuart has performed as a sideman with a remarkable range of jazz artists, from Charlie Rouse to Errol Parker, Steve Coleman’s Five Elements with Cassandra Wilson and Geri Allen to the Cadence All Stars, and has led highly-praised Quartets of his own. For his complete bio, album reviews and photos, please visit www.rorystuart.com.

Rory’s critically-acclaimed CD, “Hurricane,” was reprinted by Sunnyside in 2004, complete with new artwork and liner notes. “Hurricane” received a four-star review in DOWNBEAT and was voted among the 10 best recordings of the year in CODA. A new CD (“So Rise Up”) featuring Ari and Mark is being prepared for release.

8:30PM  ARMEN DONELIAN QUINTET
Armen Donelian, piano, composer;  Marc Mommaas, tenor saxophone;  Mike Moreno, guitar;  Arthur Kell, bass;  Tyshawn Sorey, drums
Armen Donelian Quintet image
“A pianist with a crystalline touch but a penchant for avant-gardism” (New York Times), Armen Donelian appears globally as soloist, band leader, Grammy-nominated composer, Fulbright Scholar, NEA Fellow, author and professor. Showcasing a new band and several new arrangements, Donelian will take the stage at Cornelia Street Café on Sunday, April 9 for 2 sets with Marc Mommaas (saxophone) to celebrate the release of their new CD, All Or Nothing At All (Sunnyside), with Mike Moreno (guitar), Arthur Kell (bass) and Tyshawn Sorey (drums).

Has the allure of chamber music while still preserving the resources of a powerful drive...The world of Armen Donelian is irreducible in the game of influences. The ear is never left to amuse itself, so great is the diversity of the written and improvised works and the coherence of the repertory which guides us from beginning to end in a permanent state of wonder.

ComposersCollaborative presents Serial Underground the 2nd Monday of the month image
Allan Kozinn (New York Times) contextualizes SERIAL UNDERGROUND, CCi’s monthly performances in the basement of the Cornelia Street Cafe – “Informal performances of concert works were part of the musical ecology, and to some extent part of the ecology of urban night life as well. That tradition lasted into the 20th century, when ... “serious music” reserved the concert hall as its home, and jazz (and later other popular forms) took its place at street level. ... Composers Collaborative and its inventive artistic director, the composer and pianist Jed Distler, have decided that this [lost] intimacy [between listeners and performers] is worth recapturing.”

SERIAL #15 presents us with the family history of our disgruntled protagonist in The Gold Standard (excerpt) by Jed Distler and Ed Schmidt (The Last Supper); Miranda Cuckson and Blair McMillen play music of Ralph Shapey, Paul Schoenfield and Daniel Bernard Roumain; plus monologuing composer Gerald Busby.

6:00PM  STORYTELLING
Barbara Aliprantis, host

FEATURED TELLERS:

Bernie Kramer

Mike Seliger

"Kramer & Seliger" sounds like a law firm, to be sure. BUT, Bernie and Mike are NOT lawyers. They are master storytellers. Drawing on a natural sense of humor, a "way with words" and years of studying mime, clowning and physical performance with the late great Tony Montanaro of Maine, these two long-time friends are winning combination. They plan to swap stories that will make even a basset hound smile.

Storytelling occurs the second Tuesday of every month.

Songwriter's Beat Piano Showcase: Rob Morsberger & Valerie Ghent image

Rob Morsberger has released three acclaimed CDs with longtime collaborators Jon Herington, Paul Ossola and Robin Gould. A top-call composer for PBS, he is currently scoring the series NOVAscienceNOW, on which he is also featured as a singing reporter. He has recently arranged an album for Jules Shear and logged up sideman credits (on keyboards/ accordian/ vocals) with Loudon Wainwright III, Dan Zanes and many others.

Artist/producer/singer-songwriter Valerie Ghent has released three CD's on her own label, West Street Records, and has run NYC's most popular acoustic songwriter's night, The Songwriter's Beat, since she founded it in 2000. With an unforgettably powerful and sensitive voice (3 1/2+ octave range) combined with a bluesy, soulful and funky piano style, Val - a native downtown New Yorker - has been composing and performing since the age of 8. Val has recorded and/or toured with luminaries such as Ashford & Simpson, Deborah Harry, Dr. Maya Angelou, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, Billy Preston, TM Stevens, Defunkt and many other artists.

Not content to only create and perform music, Val actively brings music to others, as artist, as singer, as composer, as in-demand producer/session musician/engineer and as nonprofit director. A multiple ASCAP Pop award winner and American Music Center grant recipient, Val recently received the Paul Ramos Award for Service to the Arts for her work in starting The World Foundation for Music and Healing (WFMH), which brings music to children directly affected by the events of September 11th. (The WFMH is funded by the American Red Cross Recovery Grants Program.)

Heavily inspired by the singers and songwriters he grew up listening to; Northeast’s music is open and free with strong rock impulses and deeply wrought lyrics. Northeast has captured the independence of singers who, like David Bowie, Neil Young, and Peter Gabriel, project an original voice and style within their genre. Catch this solo acoustic performance... it will stir your emotions.

8:30PM  JOHN HOLLENBECK'S CLAUDIA QUINTET
John Hollenbeck, composition/drums/percussion;  Drew Gress, bass;  Ted Reichman, accordion;  Chris Speed, clarinet/tenor sax;  Matt Moran, vibraphone
John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet image
The Claudia Quintet is one of the most innovative and promising groups to emerge in recent years from 'downtown' NY's new alt jazz scene. The group has released 3 CDs, “The Claudia Quintet” in 2002 followed by “I, Claudia” in 2004 and “Semi-Formal” which was released in October 2006. They have toured extensively, receiving widespread praise and generating a buzz among both jazz and post rock audiences in the US, Europe, Australia and beyond. Simultaneously accessible and intriguing, the Claudia Quintet's music can perhaps best be described as post jazz: combining propulsive grooves, sophisticated compositions and near telepathic improvisation. Their releases have received critical acclaim, including four stars from DownBeat magazine, “Best of 2002" by Jazztimes and a “CHOC” from Jazzman. In 2006, Claudia will tour in Canada, the US (Northeast Coast, Mid-West and West Coast), and Europe (Denmark and Portugal).

“Innovative jazz does not have to be harsh, angry, loud, shrill, or grating; it can be delicate, witty, ethereal, and radiantly lyric, as the Claudia Quintet pointed out...”
[Chicago Tribune]

“...a band with the hippest groove in music today.”
Mark Corroto, allaboutjazz.com

“The Claudia Quintet creates a fresh, distinctive sound while it obliterates barriers between jazz, classical and progressive rock.”
