Brazilian guitarist, Nelson Faria moved Los Angeles in 1983, to attend G.I.T
(Guitar Institute of Technology), where he studied with Joe Diorio,
Joe Pass, Ron Eschete, Howard Roberts, Scott Henderson and Frank
Gambale. While in L.A., he also attended private lessons with the
chord melody master Ted Greene.
Back in Brazil, Nelson Faria became one of the most popular artists
on call lists for guitar workshops, clinics, seminars, record
sessions and concerts.
He has performed on over 100 records and made personal appearances all
around the world. He has performed and/or recorded with artists like João Bosco, Ivan
Lins,
Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jeff Andrews, Lisa Ono, Milton Nascimento, Edú Lobo, Leila Pinheiro
among
others.
Born in Porto Alegre, Kiko Freitas, drums, started playing as a professional in
1987,
after studying with Argos Montenegro and at the “Orquestra
Sinfônica de Porto Alegre” school.
Kiko is always making researches and studying different techniques
and drummers. He has played with Nico Assumpção, Michel Legrand, João
Bosco, Frank Gambale, Jeff Richman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jeff
Andrews, Cliff Korman, Frank Solari, Ivan Lins, Luiz Eça and
others. In 1996, he was invited by the piano player David Goldblatt to go to L.A. There,
Kiko
had the opportunity to meet many jazz musicians such Dough Lunn, Vadeem Zilberstein,
John
Leftwich, and had the big chance to verify if his autodidact researches were proceeding
having lessons with Dave Weckl. In Cuba, Kiko studied afro-Cuban rhythms with the great
percussion player Changuito, creator of the Songo, also played with Ricardo Baungarten at
the
biggest jazz club in Havana. Currently, Kiko is
playing in João Bosco´s Band, touring around Brazil, EUA and Europe, including concerts
with
the great Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
Self-taught musician, Ney Conceição begun his carrer working in the local
scene of Amazonia. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1996, and, since
then, he has been participating as a session player on several
records by noted brazilian and international instrumentalists and
singers, as: Airto Moreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Arthur Lipner,
Cláudio Nucci, Danilo Caymmi, Gilson Peranzetta, Gonzalo Rubalcaba,
Jane Duboc, João Donato,Naná Vasconcelos, Roberto Menescal, Sivuca,
Sebastião Tapajós among others. With Robertinho Silva he shared his
first cd, "JAQUEDU", in 2000, and also toured Brasil, EUA and
Europe. In the present time he is performing, together with Kiko Freitas e Nelson Faria, in
João Bosco’s band, with whom he recorded the most recent cd "Malabaristas do Sinal
Vermelho",

The mad scientist of musicology perhaps, however what self-respecting musician with years under their belt has not
developed a style so unique it withstands time. Harvie S has taken Latin music and with his own modern style created this
hybrid production to be released in April called “Funky Cha”, a very cool piece of Afro-Cuban sound with an attitude!
Keeping the Latin flavor the various sounds intermingle at a ferocious rate and produce a tidal wave effect. From string
attacking stage left to bass from stage right with center stage as percussion central, this is a jazz performance of eclectic
splendor.
Case in point “C7 Heaven” which one might call sound microwaved! Extraordinary arrangement and composition, acutely
structured without a doubt but with the suspect of being improvised note by note all over it.
The Jay Collins saxophone mystique is very sharp and acute in presentation on title cut “Funky Cha.” Note the mix of genres
and the percussion work of Beaver Bausch along this ride. This is a special cut providing a unique atmosphere.
Stay close to the music, stay close to the direction it takes you on that first listen…. It tends to stir the juices…

A mouthful, that word. Yet you feel the implicit paradox in it, of
the soft and the hard. For soft as we are, we have bone and teeth (and wish
they wouldn't fail us!). And there is nothing more beautiful in Nature than
the shelters and solid inner structures that small and big critters alike
have evolved. Lia Addadi of the Weizmann Institute and Joanna Aizenberg of
Bell Labs will introduce us to this exquisite world of structure and
function between the organic and inorganic. Agata Olek (an artist who will
crochet anything from a Venice vaporetto to prostate cancer), working with
actor Carol Haunton, will crochet balloons and a fairy tale to illuminate
a Venus Flower Basket, a glass sponge which "traps" two shrimp in its
interior. Maybe she'll crochet around you; watch out!

OVID’S METAMORPHOSES

Todd Conner performs his new translation and solo adaptation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Storytelling stripped to the bare essentials, Conner’s Metamorphoses returns audiences to the very well-springs of the Western storytelling tradition. Conceiving, translating and adapting from Ovid, Conner reaches even further back than his ancient Roman source material to explore the poetic/bardic tradition from which Ovid drew his inspiration. With only his voice, body, a few props, a minimum of light, and a harp (learned specifically for this piece, for which he also composed accompaniment), Conner’s performance is a reminder that in our age of relentless over-mediation and mass-entertainment, it is the individual human being who must remain the essential medium of artistic expression.
Todd Conner, in addition to being a performer, is an award-winning playwright and accomplished director.
