ong ago in a tiny cabin two young aliens found that more than re-wiring motherboards, they liked writing music together. music
whose individual contributions are indistinguishable from the finished concept. music of beats and peaks, low end and delicacy.
sometimes they sang, sometimes the music was enough.

(also members of Baerman's piano trio), as well as special guest, alto
saxophonist Steve Wilson, they swing and bop their way through tunes penned

Vocalist and composer Wendy Gilles was a featured soloist in ensembles led by Django Bates, Dave Holland, and Jay Thomas. Wendy started singing at an early age in church and school choirs. While earning her BMA in classical singing at Pacific Lutheran University, Wendy naturally gravitated towards jazz. She quickly became a featured soloist in PLU's vocal jazz ensemble, and performed regularly in regional clubs and venues in the Pacific Northwest. This past May, Wendy completed her Master's degree in Jazz Vocal Performance at New England Conservatory.
"Wendy Gilles is one of the most consistently spot-on singers I've heard. Her voice is lush and welcoming, and her interpretation and improvising convey a musicality and confidence that puts the music first, no matter what she is singing." - Dominique Eade
Heather Masse grew up in rural Maine and began singing at an early age. She completed her Bachelors degree in Jazz Vocal Performance with a Distinction in Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music. Although her singing is deeply influenced by jazz, she is equally comfortable singing folk,
country, blues, and pop. Heather is the latest addition to the critically acclaimed group The Wailin Jennys, and will be performing on their world tour through 2008. She also performs with the world-renown band The Wayfaring
Strangers at venues including NPR's World Cafe, Somerville Theater, and
Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops. Heather also sings with the up and coming Boston
based band Joy Kills Sorrow, a modern string band that finds its home in the
cracks between bluegrass, jazz, old-time, and pop styles. In 2006, she recorded with her own project,
Heather and the Barbarians, a 6 piece band including 2 clarinets/sax, bass,
drums, and guitar that plays orignal songs influenced by jazz, country-blues,
and folk styles. Their debut CD, "Tell Me Tonight" is now available!

"Diverse program" is sometimes a euphemism for "hodge-podge," but the young reed player's Translucent Space accounts
for all its esthetic zig-zags. Allusions to electric jazz and classical motifs snuggle next to free-bop jaunts and hard- driving
swing. Rigby plays as it lays, and does so with élan."
- Jim Macnie, NYC VILLAGE VOICE (Dec. 06)
"I'd go so far as to say that Translucent Space is the freshest and most individual jazz album of the year so far; it lets light
through but in such a way that the antecedents and influences are sensed diffusely rather than clearly seen."
- Brian Morton, UK JAZZ REVIEW (Sept. 06)
"Translucent Space" (Fresh Sound-New Talent), the new album by the saxophonist and bass clarinetist Jason Rigby, doesn't
come by its name casually; it's an album of airy, often diaphanous music, with faint echoes of early fusion and Third Stream.
Mr. Rigby plays here with the album's rhythm section of Mike Holober on piano, Cameron Brown on bass and Mark Ferber on
drums. At 8:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Cafe."

ENTERTAINING SCIENCE -- REFLECTIONS OF THE ANIMAL MIND

The Face in the Mirror: Reflections of the Animal Mind
Do other animals share with us a sense of self? How big and complex a brain does it take to recognize that the one staring back at you in a mirror - is you! Diana Reiss, cognitive psychologist at Hunter College and senior research scientist at Wildlife Conservation Society presents her compelling work showing that dolphins and elephants, along with great apes and humans are members of an exclusive club whose members recognize themselves.
And can elephants make art and music? We'll explore this question with a brand-new video of musician Dave Soldier teaching and conducting the Thai Elephant Orchestra, and a presentation of elephant art by David Ferris, director of the Asian Elephant Art & Conservation Project.
