8:30PM  SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND
Ann Klein, host

Ann Klein Sara Wendt David Goldman Rik Ekstrom
Songwriters in the Round image

Ann Klein is a singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer. As a composer/songwriter, she has: toured in Europe consistently for 10 years; written music for three documentaries for French television; written music for THE ENERGY FACTORY (an organization committed to tackling the growing problem of child obesity in the United States); written music for MetroMusic – a hip and happenin’ library in NYC. As a guitarist, Ann has had the honor of playing with Kate Pierson of the B-52s, Joan Osborne, PM Dawn, Sara Lee, Toshi Reagon, Keri Noble, Mary Lee Kortes, Sara Wendt, Valerie Ghent and Ani DiFranco, among others. She has also produced several artists with her partner, Tim Hatfield, of Cowboy Technical Services. Ann was also the recipient of a grant to attend the McDowell Colony in the summer of 2000. However, Ann is most proud of her ability to wah wah her way out of any solo, any time.

“Her music is a hybrid of sounds--classic rock and pop, alternative, progressive and blues influences find their way into her intelligent, slightly off-kilter songs… In a perfect world, Klein would be a big star.” Mick Skidmore, Relix --

www.ann-klein.com

Sara Wendt: A former lead singer of Homer Erotic, Sara Wendt's boy-choir voice sings songs set to lively melodies that tell stories of spinning, falling and slipping, not altogether very settling, but joyful in their own right. Her new CD, Weightless With Love, will be released April 24th.

David Goldman: Combine heartfelt singing and songwriting with worldly influences from Blues, Folk, Country, Celtic, Latin and WorldBeat roots, and you have David Goldman’s Summer With Juliet on WORLDWAVE RECORDS. His music celebrates musical colors across many cultural divides; it has received airplay on nearly 140 radio stations worldwide and garnered various songwriting awards from Billboard Magazine, Great American Song Contest and ASCAP.

"Summer With Juliet is truly wonderful, full of that all-too-rare quality of vision meeting craft and giftedness head on…. David Goldman's voice is beautiful, his lyrics surprising, his range impressive, and the record stays with you…" Rob Mathes, songwriter, performer, arranger. (Elvis Costello, Sting, Bonnie Raitt, etc.)

“...Summer with Juliet accomplishes a travelogue of sorts that would cause envy in some of the pop world’s most notorious border crossers, such as Sting, Paul Simon and David Byrne...” Tom Staudter, Croton Gazette “On The Beat” (Also writer for the New York Times and Downbeat)

www.DavidGoldman.com

Rik Ekstrom: Rik Ekstrom is a songwriter, guit-for-hire, and builder of things. His music is steeped in northern European and early American traditions, but never strays far from the Grand Epoch of American r&r. As an accomplished finger-style and slide guitar player, Rik interprets music with crafty hands. Simple ideas are rendered with an eye to the details. Rik's songwriting delivers narratives based in plain, unromantic realism and pointed irony. His characters stumble between folly and quiet heroism, and sometimes into homicidal revelation. Rik's playing is said to combine elements of the Piedmont blues ( Rev. Gary Davis via Jorma Kaukonen) and Celtic/American traditional music (Martin Simpson, Kelly Joe Phelps) with a bit of southern Californian folk/pop (Peter Case). But mostly Rik Ekstrom is a builder of things.

8:30PM  GNU VOX: JULIE HARDY QUINTET
David Devoe, curator

Julie Hardy, voice;  John Ellis, tenor saxophone;  Randy Ingram, piano;  Matt Clohesy, bass;  Kendrick Scott, drums
Gnu Vox: Julie Hardy Quintet image
Jazz Times critic Christopher Loudon states that "Hardy lives, like [Kurt] Elling and [Bobby] McFerrin, in a musical world of her own, and it is a marvelously dynamic place."

With one step into the world of Julie Hardy, it is clear that she is not a typical jazz singer. The Wish, her forthcoming release on World Culture Music, shows us a highly trained composer, improviser and re-inventor of jazz standards, backed by a spectacular collection of some of New York's best young jazz talent. Through a diverse program of wordless originals and re-workings of timeless standards, Hardy has developed a sound that is truly unique and honest.

In 2005, Hardy released her debut recording A Moment’s Glance (Fresh Sound New Talent) to a full house at the Jazz Standard in New York City. That year she was also selected to perform at the Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center. This past year Hardy was acknowledged for her talent as a composer by receiving the 2006 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award for her composition “No Turning Back”.

6:00PM  PINK PONY POETRY
Jackie Sheeler

Pink Pony Poetry image
Jackie Sheeler's legendary open mic poetry series. Arrive before 6 pm to sign up. This week's feature is Angelo Verga. A recent poem:

In this life, I have good parents

A kind father who teaches me to work with my hands

A mother who loves me

I walk barefoot in a well-run sparkling city

The money is plentiful and black as poppy seeds

The food is cheap easy to eat sandwiches without meat

The women who are unmarried wear white lab coats

They would like me to speak to their fathers

But I have a beautiful girlfriend who is warm & generous

The doorways have no doors

The winters are mild

The fireplaces are as easy to work as phones

I have plaster dust on my overalls, I’m happy

My hair is black, my teeth straight

In this life which I create my parents are good

Chris Lightcap Quartet image
"One of the bright lights of New York's younger players, the bassist has been fashioning a group sound around a pair of tenor saxophonists for years. His writing can be simultaneously demonstrative and reflective, an accomplishment that gives his music emotional breadth."
-Jim Macnie, Village Voice

"A bassist-bandleader who's made some excellent records with two tenor saxophones out front."
- Ben Ratliff, New York Times

"Bassist Chris Lightcap has worked alongside avant-minded mavericks such as Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, and Joe Morris, but he's also right at home in more mellifluous units led by Regina Carter and Craig Taborn. perhaps that explains the infectious swagger and fat grooves he brings to bear on Bigmouth (Fresh Sound New Talent), a playful bag of tunes featuring saxists Tony Malaby and Bill McHenry and drummer Gerald Cleaver"
