Ben Waltzer Group image
“This no-nonsense jazz pianist in the Ellington and Monk vein (who has occasionally written for Arts & Leisure) gets a big, ringing sound out of the extreme registers of the instrument; he also takes a decisive stand against the ultra-sensitive, lush-harmony tendency of so many young jazz composers.”
--Ben Ratliff, NYTimes

“Brilliantly performed…very impressive.”
- Ahmad Jamal, jazz piano legend, of ‘100 Dreams Ago.’

9:00PM & 10:30PM  THE TUBA PROJECT FEATURING BOB STEWART
Lucian Ban, piano;  Sam Newsome , soprano saxophone & flute;  Bruce Williams, alto saxophone & flute;  Eric McPherson, drums;  Bob Stewart, tuba
Founded in 2004 by long time musical collaborators alex harding and transylvanian born pianist lucian ban the group brings together some of the most creative voices in jazz today to form a unique ensemble built around the voices of saxophones and tuba.

benefiting immensely from the extraordinaire talent of mr. bob steawart who’s widely considered the best tuba player in jazz and who can play the instrument in any way possible the group also feature the soulful and bluesy baritone sax of mr. alex harding, the beautiful sound of j.d. allen’s ten sax, the strange eastern european influences of ban’s piano and the creative rhythms of a master of modern jazz drumming, mr. derrek phillips.

pulsating blues, new orleans riffs, post bop lines, funk grooves and free jazz outbursts can be found in their music but the sound of the group goes well beyond all those to become a voice of its own. playing original music the four musicians have to be seen and heard to get the full picture.

after dozens of concerts & acclaimed performances the group has recorded (direct to track) an album of original music to be released february 2006 on cimp records. not to be missed !

21 CENTURY SCHIZOID MUSIC PRESENTS Nathan Davis image
Memory Spaces: Electroacoustic Music by Nathan Davis

Composer and percussionist Nathan Davis (NYC) makes music that is inspired by American experimentalism, Balinese gamelan, and by a fascination with sound and the natural world. The program will include solos with live processing for triangles, river stones, amplified computer, and alto flute (performed by Claire Chase), and a cello and hammered dulcimer duo for Odd Appetite (with cellist Ha-Yang Kim). These pieces explore remembered spaces of wonder, panic, beauty, claustrophobia, and transformation.

ong ago in a tiny cabin two young aliens found that more than re-wiring motherboards, they liked writing music together. music whose individual contributions are indistinguishable from the finished concept. music of beats and peaks, low end and delicacy. sometimes they sang, sometimes the music was enough.

"For two people, EMMA makes an unbelievable sound and fury."

Up-and-coming vocalist Heidi Krenn embodies a rare combination of classic jazz tradition and bold new style. After discovering and cultivating a passion for jazz music in her native Austria, Krenn won a prestigious Fulbright Award to study in New York City in 2004, symbolically marking her move to the next level of her musical career. Having studied and performed with highly respected musicians in Europe, she now showcases her unique vocal abilities among New York’s jazz elite. Her voice is a distinctive instrument in its own right, capable of navigating the most complex phrases and sophisticated harmonies. Krenn’s vocal prowess will surely establish her as one of the most highly sought after jazz vocalists in the years to come.
