ENTERTAINING SCIENCE -- COLTRANE, EINSTEIN, AND COSMOLOGY 2
Roald Hoffmann
Stephon Alexander, saxophone & cosmology;
Robert Rowe, composer and music theorist
|
|
|
Channelling the Sound of the Cosmos with cosmologist and sax player Stephon Alexander and his trio. Plus, the interactive musical systems of Robert Rowe, composer and music theorist.
Ever since the discovery of the 'quantum fluctuations' in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation in the early nineties, people have tried to figure out how the primordial structures in the universe emerged from 'nothing'. Stephon Alexander, a cosmologist at Penn State as well as a superb sax player and composer, will explore with us the origin and persistence of large scale structure formation in the universe. And, with his group, reinterpret this process through jazz improvisation, resonance and rhythm.
He will be paired with composer and NYU music theorist Robert Rowe, whose work has two main strands: the programming of music composition and improvisation, and interactive music systems, in which composition is influenced by a machine analysis of human musical expression during live performance. If you will, a search for large- and small-scale structure formation in improvised and composed music over time.

HARRI STOJKA: A TRIBUTE TO GIPSY SWING
Harri Stojka, guitar
|
|
Swing at its best:
Harmonies and runs, vivacity and fine sounds tied together in a bouquet of great variety, played with virtuosity, feeling and
joy.
The themes are clear, no matter how much leeway there is for improvisation.
Staccato or well-tempered, tempos are always characterised by lightness.
The band is homogenous, a perfect formula.
Nothing to be added, this is rhythm and swing!
Werner Elsnig
Harri Stojka about his CD:
I love “old-fashioned jazz music”. I have always been fascinated with jazz music from the 1930ies and 1940ies. The
carefree, nimble way in which the virtuoso soloists play flowing melodies, the “old-fashioned” harmonic structures – seemingly
simple, and yet so difficult!
On this CD I play on a wonderful, magical (my wonderful, magical) gypsy jazz guitar – a Joseph di Mauro, built in Paris in
’87 – playing this music on such an instrument is always an experience beyond compare ... a fantastic journey back to a time
when jazz was most intense, purest, greatest, at least for me!!

BURTON GREENE TRIO
George Schuller, drums;
Ed Schuller, bass;
Burton Greene, piano
|
|
|
This is a new group, although the players know each other and have been friends for years. The idea of the piano trio is to
present jazz which emcompasses a wide history of the jazz piano literature. We play “inside”, “outside”, “up and down”, for
that matter.. The group members have vast experiences in all kinds of jazz forms.. from the 1940’s and ‘50’s until the present
avant improvised music. Along the way there are ethnic quotes from Balkan and other native folk sources, and a distinct
feeling for the classics as well. Come down and hears us.. You’ll be surprised!
Burton Greene has been on the jazz scene since 1962 first in New York, and then in Europe since the early 70’s. He’s
one of the creators of the “NYC downtown in sound”. His early 60’s group the Freeform Improvisation Ensemble with Alan
Silva was a trail blazer for the free improv groups that followed. Burton was an original member of the Jazz Composers Guild
in 1964. Since that time he has over 40 recordings of his music in a wide range of contexts, solo to large ensemble, acoustic
and electronic musics. Burton spends a lot of time in New York these days, matriculating from his home on a houseboat in
Amsterdam. Reviewer Derek Taylor in a recent issue of All About Jazz writes "Burton Greene ranks as one of the seasoned
survivors in creative improvised music. Like a handful of his ESP (Records) peers he's still at it after all these years, plugging
away at his craft and creating chameleonic music along the way... Greene sounds great as well, foraging over the finely tuned
ivories with a self-assurance and acuity ideally suited to the auspicious surroundings."
"Like Burton Greene last quartet disc for CIMP, 'Isms Out', this one is one of the year's most remarkable offerings." —
– Cadence
"...this session succeeds in whetting the appetite for its forthcoming siblings and shows Greene a musical synergist still
imbued with something important to say."
– Bagatellen

MARCUS ROJAS'S BIG HAPPY
Michael Blake , saxophones;
Charlie Burnham, violin;
Dave Phelps, guitar;
Calvin Weston, drums;
Marcus Rojas , tuba
|
|
|
Marcus Rojas conjoins some of the most intensely happy downtown players.
“Tuba player Marcus Rojas is a blend of Motown bassist James Jaemes Jamerson and a teenage mutant ninja turtle. With
barely a pause, Rojas pumped enough air into that big brass behemoth to keep it percolating throughout two sets and, like the
late Motown legend,never let a syncopated beat keep him from building a melodic part as well. This was tuba you could love
solo.”

SANDA & THE NEW GANG
Sanda Weigl, voice;
Lucian Ban, piano;
Alex Harding, saxophones;
Sam Bardfeld, violin;
Sean Conlly, bass;
Gerald Cleaver , drums
|
|
Romanian expatriate singer Sanda Weigl has quite a personal history. She first learned gypsy songs as a child and
found early success as a child star on Romanian television. Later she was a rock singer in East Berlin, and was tossed into
prison for protesting against the communist regime. In the 1990 she moved to the USA and she quickly became known as the
“Gypsy Queen of Downtown New York”.
Avant-jazz neighbors from Sanda’s adopted home New York City, including illuminaries like the Romanian born pianist
Lucian Ban on piano (and arrangements), Alex Harding on sax, Sam Bardfeld violin, Sean Conlly on bass and Gerald Cleaver
on
drums serve as a balancing beam for her thunderous, mezmerizing and sinfully spooky vocal “Gypnastics”.
„
To call Sanda’s voice ‚powerful’ would be an understatement...Her interpretations are dramatic, even theatrical, but never ‚over
the top’...If you’re a fan of vocal ethnic music of any sort, that’s something you don’t want to miss.“

CHRIS LIGHTCAP GROUP
Tony Malaby, tenor saxophone;
Andrew D'Angelo, alto saxophone;
Jacob Sacks, piano;
Gerald Cleaver, drums;
Chris Lightcap, bass, compositions
|
|
"One of the bright lights of New York's younger players, the bassist has been fashioning a
group sound around a pair of tenor saxophonists for years. His writing can be
simultaneously demonstrative and reflective, an accomplishment that gives his music
emotional breadth."
-Jim Macnie, Village Voice
"A bassist-bandleader who's made some excellent records with two tenor saxophones out
front."
- Ben Ratliff, New York Times
"Bassist Chris Lightcap has worked alongside avant-minded mavericks such as Cecil
Taylor, Anthony Braxton, and Joe Morris, but he's also right at home in more mellifluous
units led by Regina Carter and Craig Taborn. perhaps that explains the infectious swagger
and fat grooves he brings to bear on Bigmouth (Fresh Sound New Talent), a playful bag of
tunes featuring saxists Tony Malaby and Bill McHenry and drummer Gerald Cleaver"
