GMT_EXPRESS & JUSTIN ROTHBERG TRIO
|
|
|
1st set: JUSTIN ROTHBERG TRIO:
Justin Rothberg, guitar; Gil Smuskowitz, acoustic bass; Hiroyuki
Matsuura, drums
The Justin Rothberg Trio plays original jazz/funk music. Taking inspiration from a variety of different styles, the trio's
focus is always on improvisation.
"We try to explore a variety of different styles of music. While the trio is firmly dedicated to jazz, we try to stay as open
minded as possible. Songs are influenced by hiphop, funk, dub reggae, Latin, world music, and anything else the band has
been listening to. To keep the music from sounding stiff, everyone tries to trust each other's musical taste. Even though I write
all of the tunes, it's still a very open vibe on stage. No matter what song the band is playing, we're always open to
experimentation."

2nd set: GMT_EXPRESS :
Gerald Thomas, saxophones, compositions; Justin Rothberg,
guitars;
Jack Glottman, piano; Gil Smuskowitz, acoustic bass; Jeffrey White Jr., electric
bass; Eduardo Sanchez, percussion; Hiroyuki Matsuura, drums
with Special Guests:
Scott Reeves, trombone, alto fluegelhorn; Michael C. Lewis, trumpet,
fluegelhorn; Poul Weis, trumpet, flugelhorn; Randal Watson, acoustic guitar, trombone; Alex
Moses, flute, alto flute; Sean White, soprano saxophone
This band, put together by Gerald M. Thomas to showcase his music,
represents a very diverse range of style and expression. Brazilian
sambas mixed with hard-driving funk, traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms
underpinning lyrical melodies and Neo-Soul harmonies are just some of
the combinations employed cohesively and tastefully for this particular
group. The band is composed of a full rhythm section (guitar, piano,
drums and percussion) and several horns (saxophones, flugelhorn and
trombone) with a mixed electric/acoustic sound.
Gerald is a native New York saxophonist, bassist and composer, and a
graduate of City College with a BFA in Jazz performance. He has worked
for many years in many different venues, but is primarily a
straight-ahead jazz tenor man. Tonight, you will hear him on alto, soprano, and tenor.

BRAD SHEPIK TRIO
Brad Shepik, guitar;
John Hebert, bass;
Tom Rainey, drums
|
|
The Brad Shepik Trio plays in support of their recently released and critically aclaimed cd
"Places You Go".
Shepik’s new release “Places You Go,” has garnered a burst of critical acclaim including a 4 star review in Downbeat
while Allaboutjazz wrote “Shepik’s gorgeous tone and intricate skill reverberate with a dusty, open-road mentality on slow
tracks like 'Five and Dime', each note the guitarist touches glows with aching poignancy.”
Pop Matters Music Review said, “Shepik is one of the new jazz players who have redefined the “creative” or avant-
garde side of the music in a way that is challenging but also beautiful and fun.”
Shepik’s trio has masterful group interplay and soloing throughout a beautifully varied yet cohesive set of originals, from
ballads to Americana to jazz rock and straight ahead. “Balances freedom and structure…Shepik is the anchor…he’s truly
improvising without a net.” Jazztimes

STORYTELLING
Barbara Aliprantis
Steve Northeast;
Nick Spadafora;
Rivka Widerman
Storytelling occurs the second Tuesday of every month.
Steve Northeast, a brilliant Musician/Songwriter, rocks the house each time he steps center stage as he tells tales, sings his songs and plays his guitar! Steve arrived in NYC in 2002 armed with a gift for telling stories through music. He immediately began drawing inspiration from the landscape and people of our fair city, and his songs now embrace NYC's wide-ranging emotions and "attitude." Recently Steve turned to expressing himself “on canvas” and tonight he’ll tell us about his journey from music to visual art to storytelling…
Nick Spadafora, a gifted visual artist, combines oil, pastel and pencil as he explores nature, portraiture, animals and color abstracts on canvas. His work, exhibited in many of NYC's popular art galleries, always draws praise for his breathtaking use of mixed media. Nick is more comfortable showing his works of art rather than talking about them, BUT tonight he’s agreed to don an emerging storyteller’s hat – rather than an artist’s beret. He’ll set the stage with one of his earlier paintings, talk to us about his muse, confident that some of us will be inspired to step up to the OPEN MIC to share a brief story that his work brings to mind…
Rivka Widerman is a real Renaissance woman who has worn many hats, including professional storyteller, professor of law, Hebrew/Yiddish translator, workshop facilitator, and visual artist. A native of Brooklyn, now living in Manhattan, Rivka draws on her extraordinarily diverse talents, whether she’s painting a picture, telling a family story, a folktale or really big fib.
"A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What one can be, one must be." - Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), Brooklyn-born American Psychologist
