VOXECSTATIC: SOUL GARDEN
Deborah Latz, curator
Elisabeth Lohninger, voice, piano;
Pete McCann, guitar;
Evan Gregor, bass
|
|
"Soul Garden", Elisabeth Lohninger's latest CD, is a collection of predominantly originals that reflect her
quest for authenticity, love and a life lived to the fullest. In a career that has taken her from the slopes of the
Austrian alps, where she sang folk songs as a young girl, to jazz clubs, concert halls and the stages of
international jazz festivals, vocalist Elisabeth Lohninger has proven herself to be a powerful and elusive talent.
The New York Times has described Lohninger as "a powerful performer and a highly-skilled improviser and
composer", and throughout her albums Lohninger has chosen lyrical depth in favor of flashy vocalese. She has
lent her warm alto voice to songs by K.D. Lang, Joni Mitchell and the Beatles with the same penchant for
authenticity she lends to her original songs."Lohninger shapes an adventurous but accessible session that
ideally showcases her voice. Dark and dense as blackberries yet lustrous as pearls, it is a stunning instrument
that deserves smart, sympathetic support." - Christopher Loudon, Jazz Times "Elisabeth Lohninger is a
powerful performer and a highly-skilled improviser and composer."

Mat Maneri, viola;
Brad Jones, bass;
Billy Hart, drums
|
|
When Romanian born pianist Lucian Ban released Songs from Afar featuring his powerhouse quartet Elevation
with special guest Transylvanian singer Gavril Tarmure, ALL ABOUT JAZZ called the music a “triumph of
emotional and musical communication”. DOWNBEAT Magazine named Songs from Afar a 2016 BEST ALBUM of
the YEAR and hailed the “alluring timelessness and strong life-force that seem to flow through the music”,
while NYC Jazz Record called the album a “love letter to his native Romania that seamlessly blends the
traditions of jazz and folk songs”.
The CSC concert presents a stellar incarnation of ELEVATION group featuring the only East Coast appearance
by Transylvanian traditional singer Gavril Tarmure – and special guest star, legendary drummer BILLY HART -
alongside saxophonist Abraham Burton, violist Mat Maneri, bassist Brad Jones in a unique amalgamation of
Transylvanian folk with jazz and improvisation that truly spans continents and styles. Talking about Songs
from Afar, the Transylvanian expat pianist & leader of Elevation Lucian Ban says: “Songs from afar is very
personal for me because the album is intimately tied to my Romanian cultural heritage and to the jazz
influences that help me find out more about where I come from – and where I’m going. It's not only the
ancient Transylvanian folk songs that we approach in this recording, it’s also how the other pieces and
improvisations reflect the constant search for musical meaning".
