ENTERTAINING SCIENCE: MUTANT MIRACLES
Roald Hoffman, Dave Soldier, hosts

Orrin Devinsky Lowell Handler and Robin Hirsch
Entertaining Science: MUTANT MIRACLES image

Mutation and disease – can’t live with ‘em or without ‘em. Orrin Devinsky, the Director of NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, will tell us the reasons for this. And photographer Lowell Handler and our own Minister of Culture/Wine Czar/Dean of Faculty, Robin Hirsch, will read to us their serious and funny accounts of living with Tourette’s syndrome.

Mutations: As Dr. Devinsky will explain, life relies on mutation, no mutation = extinction. Mutation and disease are diversifying agents. This is especially true for neuropsychiatric disorders, where behavior the range of behavior is extended, often in novel ways. While much of this diversity may be pathological, it also contributes to creative and idiosyncratic approaches to seeing and interacting with the world.

Tourette’s syndrome is associated with both mental and motoric creativity. We will hear more of this from Lowell Handler, who has lived with the syndrome – he will reflect in context on who decides what is appropriate, inappropriate or offensive behavior for a given person in a specific situation and time. And Robin Hirsch, the master storyteller stoking the cornucopia of creativity that spills daily from the Cornelia Street Café, will read one of his apposite pieces.

The spirit of Oliver Sacks, a friend of all the people in this program – will be over the evening.

GEORGE BURTON-GROUP 5
Chris Hemingway, alto sax;  Craig Magnano, guitar;  George Burton, piano;  Noah Jackson, bass;  Wayne Smith Jr., drums
George Burton-Group 5 image

Group 5, one of George Burton's two groups playing on the New York jazz scene, is the manifestation of George's relentlessly creative ear for progressive/modern original music that hinges on jazz influenced by rock.Group 5 features saxophonist Chris Hemingway, guitarist Andy Bianco, and drummer Wayne Smith Jr. These master vibe-creators don't merely walk the genre-crossing edge, but rather run it with rock-infused chords heavy with swing, groove, and mood. Their exchange of surprising harmonies, angular rhythms, pointed chords, use of space, and rhythmic elasticity bring deliverance from the traditional rules of engagement, breaking barriers between audience and musician, resulting in an organic harmonic symbiosis.

George Burton represents what many of Jazz's most exciting figures hoped the genre would become: precarious, dynamic, revolutionary...unable to be contained." — Daniel Palmer, Nextbop

BRYAN AND THE AARDVARKS
Fabian Almazan, keyboard;  Charles Altura, guitar;  Chris Dingman, vibraphone;  Bryan Copeland, bass;  Joe Nero, drums

The imaginatively lyrical, eccentrically inventive Bryan and the Aardvarks reprise music from their long- awaited second release Sounds From the Deep Field, due out April 28 via Biophilia Records, which was written in a sudden burst of inspiration. The result is an album that is in equal parts an epic-scale modern jazz adventure, stargazing sonic dreamscape, and soundtrack for a non-existent science fiction film.

"This is a band with dynamic flux in its DNA, and brisk technique in its bloodstream. But its overriding purpose is consonance. “Pastoral shred,” my fellow critic Hank Shteamer put it on Twitter, and that sounds about right." - Nate Chinen, New York Times
