DANIEL LEVIN QUARTET
Daniel Levin, cello;  Nate Wooley, trumpet;  Matt Moran, vibraphone;  Peter Bitenc, bass
Daniel Levin Quartet image
Cellist Daniel Levin’s drummerless quartet occupies a musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none of them. Elements of European classical music, American jazz, microtonal and new music, and European free improvisation all figure prominently in the band’s unique sound. But as critic Chris May observes in All About Jazz, “Like all the most successful post-modern creative ventures, Levin’s quartet positions its antecedents in plain sight, but rises above them to create something novel, fascinating and unmistakably of its own time.” Levin and his quartet with trumpeter Nate Wooley, vibraphonist Matt Moran, and bassist Peter Bitenc, is “a provocatively assembled group of adventurous musicians,” that makes music with “the wild chaos of nature somehow centered in a sense of harmonious majesty,” according to critic Donald Elfman.

Without drums, Levin and his band mates are free to explore rhythm, melody, timbre, and texture in extremely subtle and varied ways, creating an alluring braid of lines shaded by autumnal colors, vocal inflections, and precise dynamics. “This group is able to rethink the dynamics and dialectic of a “jazz” group and find new phrasing, spacing and modes of interaction,” notes Elfman. Levin’s compositions set a lyrical tone suffused with mystery and ambiguity. But the quartet remains poised and open to the possibilities offered by the music. “For all its balance and clarity,” says Point of Departure, “the music tempers its delicacy with a dark, unsentimental edge that pushes it past the polite banter of chamber jazz into something deeper and truer.”

"Nothing short of superb. A stunning showcase for how jazz music has developed" (All About Jazz)

CARNATIC SUNDAYS: FALU
Falu Shah, voice;  Gaurav Shah, voice, harmonium;  Arun Ramamurthy, violin;  Daniel Levy, bass;  Deep Singh, tabla
Carnatic Sundays: Falu image
Falu is internationally recognized for her rare ability to seamlessly blend a signature modern inventive style with a formidable Indian classically-shaped vocal talent.

In her early years in Bombay, singer Falu (aka Falguni Shah) was trained rigorously in the Jaipur musical tradition and in the Benares style of Thumrie, honing her talent for up to 16 hours a day. She later continued studying under the late sarangi/vocal master Ustad Sultan Khan, and continues to study with the legendary Smt. Kishori Amonkar (Jaipur style). Falu moved to the States in 2000 and was appointed as a visiting lecturer at Tufts University where she taught Indian Classical Music for 2 years. Falu’s subsequent career in the States had led to a series of brilliant and high profile collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Wyclef jean, Philip Glass, Ricky Martin, Blues Traveler and A. R. Rahman amongst others. She was appointed Carnegie Hall’s ambassador of Indian Music in 2006, where her shows at Zankel Hall have been consistently sold out (as part of the Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute series). One of Falu’s most astonishing recent performances occurred alongside A.R. Rahman for President Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House for their First State dinner in Nov 2009.

Mark Taylor Quintet image
Over the last 20+ years, Mark Taylor's work with Max Roach, Henry Threadgill and Muhal Richard Abrams, among many others, established his reputation as a go-to French Hornist in the jazz and improvised music communities. SECRET IDENTITY, Mark's newest ensemble, now puts the focus squarely on Mark Taylor the composer. Putting aside the French Horn for the composer's pen, Mark has enlisted the aid of fellow musical travelers Darius Jones and Jonathan Finlayson on alto sax and trumpet, and the stellar rhythm section of Ken Filiano, bass and Michael "T.A." Thompson at the drums on a new collection of compositions created to explore Mark's current obsession with drama and narrative in contemporary improvised music.

“Mark Taylor’s quartet certainly is unlike any other performing in today’s jazz scene." -- Don Williamson JazzReview.com

With Leave The Door Open (Whirlwind Recordings), guitarist Joel Harrison teams up with sarod player Anupam Shobhakar and the product is a wholly idiosyncratic, unparalleled synthesis of Indian and American music and more particularly, the lives and interests of these two musicians.

Harrison and Shobhakar met as a result of a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship when Harrison set out to compose a piece for classical percussion, jazz quintet, and sarod. Harrison says that he and Shobhakar “spent a lot of time together figuring out how our different backgrounds could blend and cohere."
