MITCH MARCUS' INVADERS
Mitch Marcus, tenor sax, piano;
Leon Boykins, bass;
Brian Fishler, drums
|
|
Saxophonist/Pianist/Composer Mitch Marcus will be performing compositions new and old with this stellar trio.
The Invaders Trio brings together a number of diverse elements to create a sound unique to the standard piano trio. They play through-composed melodies intertwined with free improvisation, all the while swinging, mixed-meter grooves with intensity and a lively, dynamic interplay. Inspired by the likes of Ahmad Jamal, and Medeski, Martin, Wood, in the same breadth. With Mitch Marcus also on tenor saxophone (in addition to piano) the band twists and turns through a wide array of sounds.
They have a brand new release about to come out within the next few months.
"Although its music is grounded in blues, bop and other time-honored constructs, the MM Invaders Trio is not your usual jazz band. In fact, their adventurous tunes, use of unusual meters and delightfully manic arrangements travel far beyond conventional musical borders."--“All About Jazz”

MARTIN REITER TRIO
Martin Reiter, piano;
Matthias Pichler, bass;
Peter Kronreif, drums
|
|
With his 2014 release acoustic & electric trio austrian piano player Martin Reiter wanted to focus more on his trio with bassist Matthias Pichler and drummer Peter Kronreif. Both favorite sidemen had moved to NYC which made working kind of complicated. So Reiter chose the Big Apple as place for a reunion to present his new trio program “M.A.Z.” to the public. Reiter is one of Europe´s most important pianists and has a distinctive style of composing and playing. His compositions never lack strong melodic development while being rhythmically and harmonically advanced and challenging. The trio masters all those musical challenges with joy and ease and lets the listener dive into an ocean of sparkling sound.
Martin Reiter, one of Europe’s most promising piano players presents his new acoustic trio program “M.A.Z.” to the NYC-audience.

STEVE WILLIAMS TRIO
Steve Williams, bass;
Cat Toren, piano;
Connor Parks, drums
|
|
The Steve Williams Trio is a piano trio that, while reminiscent of a normal jazz trio, takes that pathway to a different level. Through the merging of compositions and improvisation, this trio beautifully weaves through textures and sounds in a way that poses deep intrigue for the listener. Influenced by innovative trios such as Paul Bley’s Trio, the Kris Davis Trio, and the Tyshawn Sorey Trio, this group knits powerful sentimentality, explosive climaxes, and mysterious patience. Bassist and Leader Steve Williams values interpersonal relationships over Jazz ‘Fame’ and seeks to make groups that have an extra-musical bond that works its way into group improvisations.

EDITH LETTNER JAZZ HEART
Edith Lettner, alto, soprano sax, duduk;
Zach Lapidus, piano;
Julian Smith, bass;
Rodrigo Recabarren, drums
|
|
This is captivating music - exciting, surprising, moving - it doesn't let go. The ethos of Edith Lettner's music demands an open musical landscape of creative ideas free of stylistic limitations. Her New York quartet Edith Lettner Jazz Heart is comprised of like-minded, musicians dedicated to playing original compositions. Theirs is complex music; harmonies are simultaneously juxtaposed with atonal melodies and solos, and rhythms vary over a wide spectrum both within and between compositions in what Lettner describes as "groove creations". Jazz Heart will play tunes from Edith's latest, and much praised album, TAKING OFF, (recorded with her European jazz ensemble, Freemotion). New compositions by Lettner and other band members will round out the set.
"The Austrian alto and soprano saxophonist accomplishes the lofty artistic pursuit with graceful ingenuity, as she fronts her [jazz ensemble]. She wields a grainy, vigorous tone on saxophones, and often favors searing melodies that brim with braying and growling dissonance. And while the compositions on [her new CD]Taking Off undoubtedly tilt toward the avant-garde, the music still can swing hard."--John Murph - DownBeat Magazine, July 2018
