Kate McGarry Trio image

Having just returned from Rochester Jazz Festival, the Kate McGarry/ Keith Ganz/Gary Versace Trio reconvene on the Cornelia St Cafe stage to continue the conversation they started with their new CD, “The Subject Tonight Is Love.” Lauded by critics and public alike, the trio's cinematic and improvisational approach creates exciting and appealing versions of standards and lesser known gems.

"Every note sung or played rings emotionally true. The music frequently casts its spell with sheer prettiness and positivism, but there are passages too when grit and backbone come first." ~Ottawa Citizen.

HASHEM ASSADULLAHI QUARTET

Hashem Assadullahi Quartet image

Originally formed in 2008 with a broad array of influences and eclectic musical tastes, the Hashem Assadullahi Quartet performs material that draws from straight-ahead jazz, avante garde, pop, and rock traditions. Over the years, the group has accumulated a strong and stylistically varied original repertoire, catered to the ensemble's proclivity for collective improvisation. With a penchant for melody and narratives, the majority of Hashem's pieces are vehicles for telling stories or portraying characters. The group has released two albums: Strange Neighbor (8bells, 014) and Pieces (OA2 records, 22097), frequently highlighted on NPR's Morning Edition and Fresh Air.

“Assadullahi is of a new generation of jazz musicians who have the compositional understanding, technique and improvisational skill to create complex works with beautiful melodies while at the same time drawing on a multitude of styles.”--Elliot Simon, NYC Jazz Review

ELSA NILSON, JON COWHERD DUO
Elsa Nilson, flutes;  Jon Cowherd, piano
Elsa Nilson, Jon Cowherd Duo image

Swedish/American Flutist and composer Elsa Nilsson approaches music with an attitude of inclusiveness. She believes there is a space to be found in music that gives us the freedom to be exactly who we are, with no pretending and no hiding. This leads her to make some unconventional choices in her compositions and playing based on where she feels the music wants to go. The lines between styles become blurred and rules get bent in order to communicate the raw emotion and human moments that tie us all together. Nilsson and pianist Jon Cowherd who is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade draw their influences form every aspect of life that moves them, combining them through the lens of jazz to create a deeply personal expression that they hope is universally relatable. They have been playing in this paired down duo setting around New York City since 2014, exploring the space that opens up when instruments are stripped away.

“(Elsa Nilsson is) One of the most dynamic bandleaders in the New York jazz scene.” --Nick Dunston, Hot House Jazz Magazine

SEBASTIAN NOELLE TRIO
Sebastian Noelle, guitar;  Matt Clohesy, bass;  Colin Stranahan, drums

Guitarist-composer Sebastian Noelle has spent much of his life traveling the elusive path between two worlds. In life, he travels back and forth between his native Germany and his adopted home of New York City; in his art, he navigates the more fluid boundaries between the abstract and the emotional. Throughout that nomadic existence, music has provided a constant source of shelter, an idea that unifies the wide-ranging music on Noelle’s third CD.

“A guitarist probably best known for his integral role in Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Mr. Noelle has a rewarding new album, “Shelter,” that showcases his embrace of both lyrical intricacies and rockish swagger” - Nate Chinen (New York Times)
