ENTERTAINING SCIENCE: EVIDENCE THAT MUSIC HEALS, AND NOT JUST THE SOUL
Roald Hoffman, Dave Soldier, hosts
Joanne Loewy, director, Louis Armstrong Center;
Julie Gold, singer, songwriter
|
|
Joanne Loewy is a researcher, clinician and the Director of the Louis Armstrong Center for Music & Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. She will be joined by Grammy-award singer-songwriter Julie Gold in tonight’s program.
Music has been a force, at the intersection of science, nature, ritual, and art, since the beginning of recorded time. Music has historically served as an overture for war (and football games) but also has enriched more positive social events -- of peace, in prayers, and for celebrations. And research on music's influence in medicine has moved forward, as investigators reveal the potent impact of music's capacity to influence the heart beat, and respiratory rate. The significance of the lullaby as a primary nurturance mechanism in neonates facing critical care will be shared by Joanne Loewy. She will show the impact of live rhythm and lullaby on infant vitality and parents' stress level.
Julie Gold will reveal the impact of song on society, as she shares her "From a Distance"
-which was released during the Iraq war, and her medical 'de-stress' tune reflecting her experience of 'The Waiting Room'

SEEING THE MOONLIGHT WHEN THE WIND BLOWS TERRIBLY
Elizabeth J. Coleman;
Kryssa Schemmerling;
Alan Walowitz
|
|
In 1000 CE, the poet Izumi Shikibu wrote,
Although the wind
blows terribly here,
the moonlight also leaks
between the roof planks
of this ruined house.
We are living in a dark and treacherous time, overwhelmed by words as propaganda, words as a glut of information and disinformation. But every poem, as Robert Frost said, is a momentary stay against confusion. Join Elizabeth J. Coleman, Kryssa Schemmerling and Alan Walowitz for an evening of poetry that celebrates the clarity and light that words used well can provide in the midst of chaos. The three of us will read new work as well as poems from our collections The Fifth Generation and Proof; Iris In, and Exactly Like Love.
