On March 8th, Composers Concordance will present ‘NYCello’ as part of the 6th Annual CompCord Festival: ‘New York/New Music.’ The program will feature cellist Craig Hultgren, a longtime advocate of new and daring music, who will perform compositions created specifically for him. Mr. Hultgren, who was a member of the Alabama Symphony for 30 years, is a recipient of two Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, a founding member of the new music ensemble Luna Nova, and a founding member and former President of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance. He will perform new and recent compositions by Dan Cooper, Joe Deninzon, Craig Hultgren, Chuck Mason, David Morneau, Gene Pritsker, Ann Warren, Mark Zanter.

The long time collaborative trio, Stranahan/Zaleski/Rosato has added the beautiful sound of guitarist and composer Gilad Hekselman. Specializing in modern jazz styles, alternative rock and improvisational artistry, Courtney has been called “one of the best improvising singers on the Northwest scene.” A finalist in the Seattle-Kobe Female Jazz Vocalist Competition, she's performed in venues and festivals from coast to coast, including NYC’s 55 Bar and Rockwood Music Hall, and Seattle’s Jazz Alley and Earshot Jazz Festival. In 2016, she completed her master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Gretchen Parlato, Theo Bleckmann and Kate McGarry.

CNQ (Curtis Nowosad Quintet) is a band that aims to bridge the gap between jazz tradition and present. Led by Canadian-born, NYC-based drummer Curtis Nowosad, the band features some of NYC’s most exciting musicians: Marquis Hill on trumpet, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Michael King on piano and Barry Stephenson on bass. CNQ will be performing original compositions by the leader, as well as drawing from a repertoire of daring and inventive arrangements of music by artists as diverse as Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Gil Scott-Heron, Pink Floyd, 2PAC and many others; much of this repertoire appears on both of Nowosad’s albums, including the WCMA-winning, JUNO-nominated Dialectics.
