Igor Lumpert, tenor sax, accordion;  Jonathan Finlayson, trumpet;  Chris Dingman, vibraphone;  Drew Gress, bass;  Kenny Grohowski, drums
Igor Lumpert & Innertextures image

Igor Lumpert is a slovenian saxophonist and composer, currently living and working in NYC. His name is one of the most well-known/frequently alluded to names in the countries of Tito’s Ex Yugoslavia, now home to a thriving jazz scene, unfortunately badly known in the rest of the world.

Lumpert returns to Cornelia Street Cafe with his adventurous group, Innertextures. The group features New York’s finest musicians Jonathan Finlayson, Drew Gress, Kenny Grohowski and Chris Dingman

"What makes Igor’s music and playing so unique is its complexity. There is a quality to his playing and compositions that has absorbed the rich traditions of jazz music in this country but has also added something new and unidentifiable. His compositions flow with ease and vitality off odd time signatures. There is also darkness and a mystery to his sound that is all his own. No one else sounds like that."-Jane Ira Bloom, sax, Grammy winner

MICHAËL ATTIAS QUARTET

MICHAËL ATTIAS QUARTET image

"Like a high-quality electronic product manufactured by the Panasonic Corporation, the career of alto saxophonist Michaël Attias has always involved being slightly ahead of his time...” – Ken Waxman, JazzWord

Celebrating the release of Nerve Dance, saxophonist/composer/bandleader/conceptualist Michaël Attias’ sixth album (available on Clean Feed Records, March 10, 2017), which deals with the aesthetics of spontaneity, the theory of elasticity and the concept of equality in music, is an expansive, spirited debut from Michaël Attias’ new Quartet, featuring Aruán Ortiz (piano), John Hébert (bass) and Nasheet Waits (drums). On Nerve Dance, we are regaled with hearing four hearts, minds and bodies hooking up at an extremely high level on nine Attias compositions, and two from Hébert. Each piece exercises a different set of muscles and faculties for the band, and every member of the Quartet carries within them the historical knowledge and a fluency in the multitude of dialects of this music; consequently we hear them free within the compositions, deep into the zone of this collective creation, transcending their respective instruments and completely surrendering to the music. There exists an instinctual, visceral need in Attias and his cohorts to play music that is honest, that rejects inertness and fully embraces the meaning of creativity and evolution. This music is found on Nerve Dance.

Ryan Keberle & Catharsis image

Recently named the #1 Rising Star Trombonist in Downbeat’s annual critics poll and hailed by the New York Times as “a young trombonist of vision and composure”, few musicians have managed to navigate the richly varied avenues of New York City’s abundant music scene with the same passion and adaptability as trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle including extensive time spent recording and performing with Maria Schneider, Sufjan Stevens, and David Bowie, to name a few. Keberle combines that wealth of influence and experience into a bold group sound with his piano-less quintet, Catharsis. Described by the Los Angeles Times as “a potent blend of cinematic sweep and lush, ear-grabbing melodies” Keberle presents Catharsis in a performance of their one-of-a-kind indie-jazz with songs rich in deep groove, melodic invention and group interaction.

SEBASTIAN NOELLE QUINTET
Sebastian Noelle, guitar;  Marc Mommaas, tenor sax;  Matt Mitchell, piano;  Matt Clohesy, bass;  Dan Weiss, drums
 SEBASTIAN NOELLE Quintet image

Guitarist-composer Sebastian Noelle has spent much of his life traveling the elusive path between two worlds. In life, he travels back and forth between his native Germany and his adopted home of New York City; in his art, he navigates the more fluid boundaries between the abstract and the emotional. Throughout that nomadic existence, music has provided a constant source of shelter, an idea that unifies the wide-ranging music on Noelle’s third CD.

On Shelter, Noelle leads a stellar quintet that brings together some of the most forward-thinking and limitless musicians in modern jazz: saxophonist Marc Mommaas (Amina Figarova, Armen Donelian), pianist Matt Mitchell (Dave Douglas, Tim Berne), bassist Matt Clohesy (Seamus Blake, Darcy James Argue, Donny McCaslin), and drummer Dan Weiss (Rudresh Mahanthappa, Dave Binney).

Noelle’s own impressive credentials since arriving in New York in 2002 include more than a decade with Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, the BMI Jazz Composer’s Workshop Orchestra, the Chris Potter Big Band, the Aaron Irwin Quintet, and the New York Jazzharmonic.

The compositions on Shelter spotlight Noelle’s far-reaching interests, bringing together disparate musical influences, inspiration from documentary film and German literature, and his studies of North Indian rhythms. The album’s ten compositions also manage the tricky feat of melding ambitious complexity with emotional communication.

“A guitarist probably best known for his integral role in Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Mr. Noelle has a rewarding new album, “Shelter,” that showcases his embrace of both lyrical intricacies and rockish swagger” - Nate Chinen (New York Times)

KRISTIANA ROEMER QUARTET

Kristiana Roemer Quartet image

Kristiana Roemer is a German-American vocalist, lyricist and composer born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany. Her musical voyage began as a toddler, inventing melodies before she had learned to speak. She began writing music very early on and by the age of 17, Kristiana was performing at venues throughout Germany such as the Westin Grand Maritim Hotel, Brueckenkeller, Porsche Museum, among others. After receiving a scholarship, she spent one year of study in the U.S. where she deepened her study of classical voice and choral music and composition. Upon her return to Germany, Kristiana intrepidly decided to move to Paris and she landed a job at the famous Aux Trois Mailletz, a world music cabaret which has a history of famous alumni. During her time in Paris, she continued her musical studies at the Paris conservatory while performing at venues such as Caveau des Oubliettes, Le Cameleon, Sunset Sunside, Relais de la Huchette, 59Rivoli, Theatre du Marais, and many others, before finally settling into New York City in 2017.

Alan Ferber Nonet image

After several years of focusing on big band writing, trombonist/composer Alan Ferber has returned to his long- standing Nonet, and has a new release on Sunnyside Records called Roots & Transitions to show for it. This 8- movement piece sprung out of an opportunity granted through a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant, funded by the Doris Duke Foundation. It’s an intricate piece featuring an ensemble of five horns and four rhythm instruments, represented on the recording by either Scott Wendholt or Shane Endsley on trumpet, alto saxophonist Jon Gordon, tenor saxophonist John Ellis, bass clarinetist Charles Pillow, guitarist Nate Radley, pianist Bryn Roberts, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Mark Ferber. The recording has garnered a stellar 4-star review in Downbeat magazine, a critic’s pick in the New York Times, and a 2017 Grammy nomination.

"Ferber's own compositions and arrangements are inspired and meticulous (and) the solo firepower here is formidable. But the best thing about this band is their collective feel for time, which allows them to sound wildly loose yet precise, as if they have been out in a bus, touring for years." Thomas Conrad (Jazz Times)
