AN EVENING WITH JENNIFER FRANKLIN & MARTHA RHODES
An Evening with Jennifer Franklin & Martha Rhodes image

Jennifer Franklin (No Small Gift, Four Way Books 2018) and Martha Rhodes (The Thin Wall, Pitt Poetry Series 2017) read from their most recent collections.

There is no evading Franklin’s forceful mastery of language. With her deft precision, sharp as a surgeon’s knife, she constructs gorgeous songs from the blinding heaps of tragedy, alchemically transforming brutality into music, both soothing and beautiful. This is her weapon, her force field, and her calling as she writes in Another School: “If only I could calm their bodies that/cannot keep still—tell them that I too/drown the silences of this world with my/own song.” —Cynthia Cruz

“In books that are as demanding as they are beautiful, Martha Rhodes has been mapping the psychic terrain of family life and romantic life in contemporary America. The way we are betrayed by others, the way we betray ourselves, the way love is both harbor and harm, the way memory is both a form of elation and of wounding—Rhodes looks at our instances of extremity and somehow turns them into bittersweet lyric utterance. Spare and unsparing, The Thin Wall is Rhodes doing her most powerful work so far.” —Rick Barot

VOXECSTATIC: ARTA JēKABSONE QUINTET "LIGHT"
Deborah Latz, curator

Arta Jēkabsone, voice, compositions;  Theo Walentiny, piano;  Lucas Kadish, guitar;  Nick Dunston, bass, compositions;  Connor Parks, drums
Voxecstatic: Arta Jēkabsone Quintet

New York City-based Latvian singer, composer and arranger Arta Jēkabsone is recognized by her velvety tone. Arta engages listeners with emotional and honest, adventurous and joyful expression of music. Arta was awarded the 1st prize at Montreux Shure Jazz Voice Competition in Switzerland (2016) and 2nd prize at Mid- Atlantic Jazz Voice competition (2017).

Arta Jēkabsone is excited to present her debut album “Light”, that was released at the end of 2017. “Light” holds the vibration of light as a feeling and each person’s inner light. It is Arta’s thought process and inspiration that has been captured together with young, talented and in the NYC jazz scene actively working musicians - Theo Walentiny (piano), Nick Dunston (bass), Lucas Kadish (guitar), Connor Parks (drums). The main message is “light” as the means of expression in the music and in the nature that is very dear to Arta. Also “light” is used as a metaphor for human beings and their energy, that they share with the world; dreams; and also, homesickness. The purpose of this music is to find the light within in each other while being a part of this musical journey. To live in a moment, while listening to the lightness and the stories that the musicians are creating and sharing with each other. In this concert, the audience will hear original works of Arta Jēkabsone and Nick Dunston. Join Arta Jēkabsone Quintet and share the light together!

“These songs prove that the music can make this world a better place to be” — Latvian music magazine “Mūzikas Saule” (review by Toms Lipskis)

MARTA SANCHEZ QUINTET
Alex LoRre, alto sax;  Jerome Sabagh, tenor sax;  Marta Sanchez, piano;  Simon Wilson, bass;  Daniel Dor, drums

Combining elements of rock, pop, jazz, classical and experimental music, Marta's tunes are rhythmically complex but strongly melodic. Music that tell stories by integrating folk elements with the harmonic sophistication and spontaneity of jazz.

The Quintet is presenting their last work, “Danza Imposible”, released by Fresh Sound Records in October of 2017. In an early review, The New York Times said about it “It features eight tunes she wrote explicitly for her two-saxophone quintet that dance with an unruly grace. It’s glimmering, propulsive music, with hints of elegiac Spanish folk song, cool jazz from the 1950s and the Romantic modern jazz of the 1990s”

PAUL SHAPIRO’S RIBS & BRISKET REVUE
Paul Shapiro, sax, clarinet, voice;  Cilla Owen, voice;  Jerry Korman, piano;  Dave Hofstra, bass;  Larry Eagle, drums
Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket Revue image

"A heaping platter of rhythm and blues and jazz served with a schmear of classic Yiddish culture is the special of the day for this joyful outfit. Led by the exuberant saxophonist Shapiro and featuring the vocalist Cilla Owens, the Revue is always willing to time warp to an era when sympathetic musical genres regularly shared the same table."--The New Yorker

Paul Shapiro, who's been called "the downtown version of Jewish novelty maestro Mickey Katz" leads his band Ribs & Brisket Revue through a lively set that swings hard and is funny to boot. From The Ballad of Irving to Yiddishe Mambo with some Dunkin’ Bagel schmeared in between “Shapiro stirs klezmer, swing and R&B, seasoning it all with a potent Yiddish tinge,” reported Time Out. Shapiro has performed with notables such as Lou Reed, Queen Latifah, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, The Microscopic Septet, Arturo O’Farrill, Rufus Wainwright, Michael Jackson and Ofra Haza, but it was his 2003 release on John Zorn's Tzadik label entitled Midnight Minyan that started him on a path that recently found him on the cover of Charles Hersch' scholarly tome Jews and Jazz and performing at international festivals celebrating Jewish culture. His wonderfully multi-ethnic and highly talented ensemble brings together many genres and is extremely fun, listenable and danceable.

Eliane Amherd Band image

Singer, guitarist and songwriter Eliane Amherd is a true cosmopolitan artist: Born in Switzerland, she lives in New York, and it is that city’s savvy multicultural energy that most influences the unique sound of her original compositions: jazzy, groovy and rooted in African, Brazilian and Latin music. Inventive, enchanted yet earthy.

Like its album art, which superimposes the Manhattan and the Swiss Alpine skyline into a seamless single image, Eliane Amherd’s latest record "Skylines" revels in complex layers and textures, internationally sourced and masterfully unified.

"Eliane Amherd sounds what would happen if Norah Jones let her inner Patty Smyth (of Scandal), Pat Benatar, and Natalie Cole out. This is the pop music that pop music itself forgot it could be.” - this is Book’s music

Israeli Jazz Spotlight: Nuphar Fey Trio image

“In her lyrical expression literally swells internal heat of emotion…superb debut!” – JazzPort magazine

Nuphar Fey’s music is a naturally communicative, multi-layered experience, moving between lyricism, charged groove and spiritual depth, telling stories without words. Free spirited, abundant and daring, Fey creates a magical land to experiment in connecting influences from cinematic, jazz, contemporary, impressionistic and alternative classical, playing with the borders of tightly composed and masterfully improvised music. Fey’s expressionism and groovy complexity is deliciously complimented by the intense energy of hyper-dynamic drummer Yogev Gabay and melodic thoughtfulness of bassist Daniel Ashkenazy. This show at Cornelia Street is their first in the US after performing in Europe and the Middle East.
